Could you imagine living in a world without science? Or even more, could humankind lives without ethics? If no, according to W. Golding in his novel “Lord of the Flies”, the man would be savage first without the intellectual that enlightens his life and second without the moral that helps respect the rules. In the novel, Piggy and Simon represent respectively the cultural and the spiritual side of human. These two characters are considered as outsiders because their acts and thoughts are totally different from the other boys.
Piggy is the first outsider introduced to the readers. First, his appearance makes him look different from others. Piggy is a fat boy that has asthma and wears glasses, so he seems powerless: “He was shorter than the fair …show more content…
First, Simon symbolizes the spiritual side of the society because of his acts that characterized by the purity and the simplicity. Golding resembles Simon to Jesus in his acts with the others and in his love of isolation. For example, when Simon gets back Piggy’s glasses when they fell down and when he helps the little boys to get the fruits:”Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands.” Chapter2, Page78. His preference to be alone and away from Ralph’s group (civilization), and Jack’s one (savagery) let the group consider him as a strange. Second, Simon presents the goodness inside the humanity. Simon tries to do what it is good for the group by helping them like helping Piggy and the little boys. Finally, Simon symbolizes the good men in the society. Simon is the man who does not care about materialism, as far as he cares about what is inside.
