Piggy: Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding in 1954. In the story, a group of boys try to escape the war in England by fleeing on a plane. However, their plane is shot down and crashes on an uninhabited island. The boys struggle to survive and work together on the island due to their young age (between six and twelve) and the lack of adults. One of the boys on the island is named Piggy. Golding uses Piggy to show that sometimes wisdom, kindness, and intelligence doesn’t always get us what we want. The author also uses him to show that the good guy doesn’t always win, but evil does.

Their reason for taking the glasses was so that the older boys could start a fire. Ralph and the few remaining members of his group decide to confront them. Not only were they going to confront them about the glasses, but also were going to suggest they work together to build a signal fire. The signal fire was a very important factor in getting rescued from the island. Instead of working together, a fight broke out between Ralph’s group and Jack’s tribe. Piggy yells that he has the conch in order to get everybody’s attention. Even though chaos has broken out throughout the island, the conch still preserves some of its meaning and all attention is turned to Piggy. The conch represents power and civilization. When somebody has it, they have the power to speak. Piggy speaks up and calls the group out for all the wrongs they have done. “Which is better, to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill.” Said Piggy. Roger is a satanic figure. He represents savagery and brutality in the book. While everybody is yelling and arguing, Roger intentionally leans on a boulder and sends it tumbling down the hill. This boulder lands on Piggy and kills him. Not only does it kill Piggy, but it crushes the conch. The symbol for civilization and order is gone, and all hell is about to break lose on the island.
In Indian Education, I think that what happens to Sherman Alexie in 1st grade relates to Piggy because they were both bullied.

For the entire book, Piggy has been ignored and not treated that well. Nobody cared about him or his ideas, but when he is dead, Ralph notices and realizes how important he was. Piggy's symbolism has become quite clear over the course of the book; he represents civilization. Golding, I believe, was trying to show how people take civilization for granted and that no one really appreciates until it's gone. Now with Piggy gone, the entire island is chaos.…

    1. To me, Ralph is a hero becuase he showed acts of leadership, courage, and heart. While other boys cared only for themselves, Ralph cared for others, and worked hard to keep everthing organized during disarray. He showed leadership by gathering assemblys, building shelters, making a fire, and trying to keep up with the smoke so they could be rescued. Ralph stood up against inhumanity and thought logically in tough situations.…

Along with that, he is clearly bothered for the “others” on the island and plays the role of an adult himself, though the irony is his concern over the absence of a commanding adult figure. Piggy, how much ever emotionless, is not self-centered, his selflessness appears throughout till the book till the end of his short life. “All...other kids,.... [they] must have got out [of the wrecked plane]... mustn't they,” Piggy reveals his concern for the other kids on the same plane as him, which communicates with the reader his kindly nature.…
