He said you blew from down here…You try, Ralph. You’ll call the others.” (16)
Piggy forms the idea of using the sundial to keep track of the time; this is a suitable suggestion for Piggy to make since a clock is a symbol of order and rules. However, the importance and meaning of time was lost, especially for the boys like Jake, who no longer care about order and rules, but rather power:
“I've been thinking…about a clock. We could make a sundial. We could put a stick in the sand, and then…We got a lot of sticks. We could have a sundial each. Then we should know what the time was." (64, 65)
Piggy would have been an extremely effective leader if it wasn’t for his physical appearance, but he still shows responsibility on the island. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph gives Piggy the responsibility of knowing all the names of the boys on the island and Piggy fulfills his responsibility:
“We got most names… Got ’em just now.” (21)
Piggy plays a huge role on the island and he is the reason why the boys on the island didn’t go corrupt before he died. Piggy is the older boy on the island who takes care of the littluns:
“There was no need! Now there is. Piggy’ll look after them.”
