Why is there a ten year old as a mother figure, called useless and believes in science? William Golding is the author of Lord of the Flies, he was born September 19, 1911 and, died June 19, 1993 also he was a British novelist and poet; he fought in the Royal Navy and when he returned he started to teach writing. Piggy was around ten years old, he is chubby, wears glasses and believes in science and that no one will rescue them. Lord of the Flies was written during the Cold War even though it was based during the World War Two. Piggy is a character who is smart, chubby and sees himself as an adult, the character is helping people out by trying to speak through the conch but they wont listen, the outcome of piggy can be negative and positive if you follow every order.

According to the quote, “We can use this to call the others…” (Golding 20) it was a conch. This effected the novel and the others by showing that Piggy knows what to do when a situation like this happens. Also because he is a mother figure in the novel it also means that he is mature. According to this quote which says, “He was the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed to grow.” (Golding 90), this shows that Piggy was not turning into a savage like the other boys because he was already mature and he new what was best for
