It’s been five weeks, five weeks since they were found. Ralph sat on the ground staring at the white blank wall, his face stuck in dull trance. He hasn’t spoken since the day all the boys were rescued. A low hum was all that Ralph could hear. Images of Piggy and the island flashed into his mind, Ralph didn’t flinch, he didn’t want to remember.

‘Ralph! Are you-’
‘glad we were-’
‘Rescued!’ Samneric shrieked. Ralph gave them no answer, he blankly stared into their eyes and returned to staring at the blank wall. Samneric looked at each other, shrugged, and ran back to their room. Night fell and the door locked as usual. A pink fluorescent light shone through the room landing right by Ralph’s feet. The light sent chills up his spine, Ralph

Ralph’s sobs were the only sound in the dark room. Ralph slid down the wall and cried.

‘Piggy, I, I want to know your name. Come back Piggy, come back.’

A few weeks after the incident, most of the boys in the building have gone back home to their families, even Jack Merridew and Roger. There was a plump woman clutching an inhaler walking down the corridor, making the air smell like sweets. Through his swollen eyes, Ralph knew that could only be Piggy’s auntie.

‘Excuse me ma’am, are you Piggy’s auntie?’
‘Piggy? Oh you must mean Hamik. I was sure he hated that nickname, but yes I am his aunt. Do you by any chance know what room he’s in?’
‘I, I’m sorry ma’am’ Ralph started to cry, he felt a pain in his chest. He lost his best mate

I tried to stop it, but I couldn’t.’

Tears welled up in Hamik’s auntie’s eyes, she fixed her spectacles and used her inhaler.
‘Oh darling, don’t cry. It’s going to be okay, I’ll be okay.’

Ralph looked at Hamik’s auntie, she had taken the news well. She didn’t break down, instead she smiled sweetly. Down the corridor, there were loud heavy footsteps. As it got closer, Ralph got more anxious. He thought it was Jack and his tribe looking for him, the last moments on the island came back to him. He felt a hand on his shoulder, it was Hamik’s auntie. There was a knock on the door, the smell of the water and salt was rich. She looked at him and crooned something Ralph never expected.

‘Someone special is here for you Ralph. I must be going now, take some sweets and thank you for taking care of Hamik. Goodbye.’
‘Thank you and you’re welcome ma’am. Bye.’ Ralph sniffled.

The door creaked open. Hamik’s auntie left and a pair of boots were at the door. Ralph looked up and couldn’t believe what he saw. His eyes sparkled with happiness, he ran up to the strong man in white and gave him a big hug. Some of the darkness in Ralph’s mind seemed to magically fly away, it was replaced with memories of joy, Hamik, and Simon. The little boy and the man in white, walked out of the building hand in hand not looking

Take this example, “‘piggy’ grinned reluctantly, pleased despite himself at even this much recognition. ‘so long as you don’t tell the others-‘ Ralph giggled into the sand” (Golding 11). Piggy felt confident about telling Ralph his nickname but Ralph being Ralph, he ended up laughing about the fact that his nickname being Piggy which then Piggy felt upset, he was chubby which kind of made it worse.
