Piezoelectricity History

Improved Essays
Piezoelectricity was discovered in1880 by Pierre and Jacques Curie, However the term piezoelectricity was coined by W.G. Henkel in 1881.G.Lippman discovered reverse process that is to say on application of electric field mechanical stresses could be developed in 1880 .Which was experimentally proven by curie brothers in 1881.
Piezoelectric materials can be natural or synthetic. Natural occurring crystals include quartz, topaz, silk, wood etc. While as synthetic are quartz like, ceramic polymers and composites. Out of 32 piezoelectric crystal structures these are further grouped into seven sub-classes triclinic, monoclinic, orthorhombic, tetragonal, trigonal, hexagonal and cubic. All of these are elastic in nature, triclinic is anisotropic,

The other ten are non-polar that is to say polarization appears after applying a mechanical loading.
There are various types of man-made ceramics with crystal structure as perovskite viz Barium titanate BaTiO3,Lead titanate PbTiO3,Lead Zirconium Titanate Pb (ZrxTi1-x)O3) PZT.Its chemical structure is called ABO3 type.Wherin A is larger metal ion, usually Lead/Barium, B denotes smaller metal ion, usually Ti/Zr. Formation of piezoelectric ceramics require mixing of fine powders of constituent metal oxides in suitable ratio, the mixture is heated around 800-1000 degree Celsius to obtain consistency. Which is then mixed with an organic binder and shaped into structural elements with

It is chemically inert and exhibits very high sensitivity that guarantees nothing more sophisticated than a charge amplifier to buffer the extremely high source. Impedance of this largely capacitive transducer. The sensing capability of a PZT patch is utilized in sensing conductance to monitor health of a structure. Key features include low cost, small size, dynamic performance, and fast response, long range of linearity, long term stability, and high energy conversion efficiency. PZT patches of any shape, size or thickness can be manufactured at a relatively low cost and it can be used over a wide range of pressures without serious non-linearity. Since it is characterised by a high elastic modulus. If heated above Curie temperature, the crystals lose their piezoelectric effect. Which varies from 150-350 degree Celsius. It can lose piezoelectricity when exposed to high electric fields above 12 kV/cm opposite to polling direction (depolling) and can lead to permanent change in the dimension of sample. PZT patches are great actuators owing to their high stiffness. Their use vary from single to multi-layered PZT systems e.g. deformable mirrors, mechanical micro positioners, biomorphic actuators. Their brittle character makes them prone to poor conformability to curved surfaces and bending and fluctuation of electrical properties with temperature is another

The extraction lab began with a .517g mixture of benzoic acid, p-nitroaniline, and azobenzene charged in a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask mixed with 50 mL of Et2O. Once dissolved, the mixture is transferred the mixture into separatory funnel and begin acid extraction. 15 mL of 3 M HCl is added to the separatory funnel and inverted until a phase boundary is present. An additional 15 mL of 3 M HCl was then added and inverted again. The aqueous layer was removed through the separatory funnel and placed in a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask labeled “acid.” 15 mL of a 3 M NaOH is added to the organic phase remaining in the separatory funnel and inverted until a phase boundary is formed.…

On the contrary, Ca13PrMnSb11 does not show ferromagnetic ordering. Interestingly, Pr-compound shows an antiferromagnetic ordering transition below 13 K. It should be noted that this sample contains a small amount of unknown secondary phase and hence, it is not possible to ascertain whether this antiferromagnetic transition is intrinsic to the Ca13PrMnSb11 phase or coming from the secondary phase. These ferromagnetic ordering temperatures are lower than the parent Ca14MnSb11 (TC = 65 K). The positive Weiss temperature (θp) of 0.64(1) K for Ca13NdMnSb11 is consistent with the ferromagnetic behavior. However, in case of Ca13SmMnSb11, the negative value of θp (-7.9(1) K) indicates the antiferromagnetic interactions along with the ferromagnetic interactions.…

The variations in the tilt angles, δ, and intertetrahedral bridging angles, θ, allow the expansion of the cage and unit cell volume as atomic vibration increases with increasing temperature in the α phase with a thermal expansion coefficient: a(K-1 ) = 2.924 x 10-5 + 2.920 x 10-10 (T-300)2 . The increasing atomic vibration causes the expansion of thermal ellipsoids or spheres. When the temperature reaches the transition temperature of 980K, the bonds in tetrahedron are particularly stressed, resulting in an extreme shape of the thermal ellipsoids. Thus there is a sharp decrease in the Fe-O bond length and the tilt angle decreases to 0, resulting in a higher level of symmetry and hence a change in the lattice structure from trigonal lattice to hexagonal lattice as well as a change in the space symmetry of the crystal.…

2.1 Nanocomposite and nanofiller Composite is the combination of two or more different materials that are mixed together in order to bring out the best properties of both material. A nanocomposite is the composite which exhibit at least one dimension of the nanoparticle size material [17]. The nanoparticle size is mainly used as the disperse particle system to enhance or improve the properties of the composite material such as strength, conductivity and wear resistance. The main reason for using nanoparticle is because of their large surface to volume which increases the filler- matrix interaction, thus increasing the effect of the material properties [18].…

The history of piezoelectricity evolution is over 120 years which was discovered by brothers Curie in 1880. They were Pierre Curie (1859-1906) and Jacques Curie (1855-1941). During the study of the generation surface electrical charge by applying pressure on some material, they found out an unusual phenomenon which was a voltage of opposite polarity was generated by pressure was applied on the crystalline minerals such as quartz. The amplitude of the generated voltage was proportional to the applied load [1]. The phenomenon was named as “piezoelectric” and the effect called as “piezo effect” [2].…

1.1 Dielectric Materials Dielectric materials are insulating materials that exhibit the property of electrical polarization. Dielectric materials support charge by acquiring a polarisation in an electric field. 1.1.1 Electric susceptibility and permittivity When a capacitor with capacitance C0 is filled with a dielectric material, its charge storage capacity (capacitance) increases to a value of C. Than susceptibility (χ^') of the dielectric materials is given by χ^'= (C-C_0)/C Dielectric permittivity〖 (ε〗_r) is defined as the ratio of the capacitance C of the capacitor filled with a dielectric to the value C0 of the same capacitor under vacuum and given as ε_r= C/C_0 =>χ^'= ε_r-1 1.1.2 Polarization The polarization P is defined as…

4.1 Strength of Anisotropy “The strength of anisotropy is calculated by the “kern and Richter” formula which gives the magnitude anisotropy k= (Vmax –V min)/Vmean, where Vmax and Vmin are maximum and minimum velocity. For P wave in the olivine crystal Vmax and Vmax are 9.89 and 7.72km/s respectively, so strength of anisotropy is 25%. For S wave k= 22% for Vmax and Vmin are 5.53 and 4.42 km/s respectively” [Seth stein 2003]. This anisotropy is the intrinsic anisotropy of the material defined as the difference between the maximum and the minimum velocity of the medium.…

In the three dimensional tetrahedral coordination polyhedron such as SiO2 the value of the d ratio is 3 and in the two dimensional layer structures it equals 2. The second important parameter is the ratio G/C12 (58), which considered as an indicator of the character of the force field. This parameter equals to 1 in case of the central force type; otherwise the force is not central. On the other hand, the G/C12 ratio approaches to unity as the central force field may reduce the fraction of the broken bonds in the network structure of the glass (57). Another parameter is the ratio between Young's modulus and shear modulus E/G.…

The microhardness values for the nanocomposites increase with increasing the nano-Cr2O3 content in the matrix, due to the higher microhardness of the nanofillers (29.5 GPa) compared to the pure poly(P-ddm) thermoset (367 MPa). The highest microhardness values is measured for the nanocomposite containing 20 wt.% of nano-Cr2O3 fraction by 413 MPa. Moreover, the good dispersion of nano-Cr2O3 fillers in the poly(P-ddm) matrix can also contribute to the improved microhardness values. Similar polybenzoxazine-ceramic systems also exhibited improved microhardness, such as poly(BA-a)-Si3N4, and poly(BA-a)-SiO2 nanocomposites [24,…
