Piestewa Peak Observation Report

Improved Essays
Piestewa Peak, located in the center of Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the highest mountains of this area and from its pinnacle, provides an advantage point for observing this upper section of the Sonoran Desert Region. It is a popular hike, but to reach the top can be challenging as often many hike shorter segments due to the ruggedness of the trail. One spring morning, I decided to join the ranks and attain the peak. As I head up the trail, I eventually realize that this journey will not be as easy as I anticipated and will require an internal muster of endurance as well as perseverance to reach summit.

Starting off for the Summit Trail, I am greeted by fellow hikers also enjoying their morning exercise. At a good pace, I trek along the dirt

I notice my first signs of fatigue. My breath is steady and my quadriceps are pulling to keep up with my pace. Further, the trail winds on. My breath quickens as my heart rate increases. I feel my leg muscles, all of them, strain under my request for them to stretch and pull my body up as the path ascends. Climbing each step until I reach an area to rest with an adequate view of the valley. I pause to catch my breath and realize that at this moment, I could easily finish here and make my way back down. Then, I notice the summit is only a short distance way. I can’t stop here, this is not my end. I felt an internal need to continue on and reach my intended destination.

Finally, I reach the summit of the mountain. Tired and breathless, I stop to appreciate the panoramic view of the valley. It was spectacular and surpasses the view from the resting area. The immensity of the valley stretched flat for an eternity. My determination to keep pushing forward, taking each step at a time lead me to my destination and completion of the trail. I was not only elated that I reached the top, but I was able to prove to myself that I could do it.

The trails at Piestewa Peak vary in intensity such as anything worth working for. I had discovered that if I really wanted to go all of the way to the top, it would require an effort to extend extra energy and dedication to push forward. It is learning how to strengthen endurance despite the challenges encountered on the trail that teaches us to find the end, be it any goal in

I think this story idea will interest Huck readers. Along the US-Mexico border, migrants and thru-hikers walk side-by-side but worlds apart. The Pacific Crest Trail attracts two types of people long-distance hikers about to start the journey of a lifetime and northbound migrants seeking better lives in the US. In spring, their paths converge near wooden columns marking the start of the 2,060 -mile journey that traverses the spine of the Sierra Mountains to the Canadian border. Both the thru-hikers and the migrants share a common bond and that's to cross the southernmost section of the PCT safely, while carrying the weight of expectations on their shoulders.…

Looking far below at the valley floor, I saw the glistening, deep-blue water of Tenaya Lake amid the sloping forests of Yosemite National Park. However, my appreciation of such splendor was far too short as I quickly refocused my attention to the issue of paramount importance: the enormous, looming wall of granite above me called Tenaya Peak. Only a few hundred feet of this dark, gray behemoth were left to be conquered after my last four grueling hours of exertion on the rock. I bore nothing but my nine centimeter nylon rope, rubber shoes, and safety harness as I clung to the slab of granite just below my father, who lead the route up the northwest buttress of the menacing mountain. As the peak steepened toward the summit, I reminded myself of the one absolute, irrevocable fact while climbing: if I become careless and make a mistake, then I may consequently forfeit…

Of the 1,500 people who start the thru-hike, only 500 or so people actually finish it (Johnson, 2007, p. 24-30). Less than 10,000 people have finished the long, grueling and punishing through-hike on the Appalachian Trail. Through hikers are only a small minority of the Appalachian Trail hikers. Many people enjoy the Appalachian wilderness. These people could be anyone looking to get away from it all and experience nature's true beauty, but this beauty that they all enjoy is in…

Jordan Romero’s book is a truly inspiring piece of work in itself. It must be a true thrill to climb all of the world’s seven summits at the youngest age ever recorded. In my life, I have encountered my own “seven summits” which parallel as challenges I have faced throughout the course of my lifetime. The first and the most monumental “mountain” I had to climb was dealing with the death of my father. Personally, this was my “Everest” and through dealing with it, it has made me a much stronger and more capable human being.…

Managing to ignore the voices in my head that tell me I’m not capable, the determination inside of me grows; I wanted to prove myself wrong. While droplets of sweat brim over the tip of my nose, aching muscles bicker in rebellion with each step. I came to a stop as my neck stretched back to examine the enormous mountain that towered over me. As the sun set behind it, an ominous silhouette stared back and cast a shadow over a trail leading into darkness. My friend’s eyes widened in wonder as I commanded, “Hike on!”…

During the hike I thought a lot about my summer reading, but sadly it didn't help me face the monster... During July of 2015 I was reading Into Thin Air while driving down south. While there, my family went on a hike that was on a smaller scale of Everest, but still gave me many lessons to take away from it. It was a short but scenic drive from the place we were staying to the long, treacherous trail. My brother and I started walking at a faster pace than our parents so we arrived at the first obstacle before our parents.…

Sharp crackles occur beneath my feet as insects scamper around, frantically searching for minute fissures to conceal themselves in.…

I have conquered numerous mountains, but I might not be able to climb another one. Back in August 2015, I and my friends took a trip to East Java as a graduation present for ourselves. There were 3 mountains in our itinerary: Mount Merapi, Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen. My father once said that a good mountain climber should have three essentials: strength, determination and humbleness. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the last one as I used to be an arrogant person that time.…

Despite having lived in Georgia for the past couple of years and having dealt with the immense heat and humidity there, I was still unprepared for the heat of the Arizona summer. As an experienced hiker, I thought of myself as experienced enough to deal with the heat and smart enough to not have to worry about it. I would find out all too soon that I was neither experienced enough nor smart enough to deal with the Arizona heat. I left my house at four in the morning, reasoning that since I had left so early I would be able to get out to the trail, do the hike, and get back, all before it became too hot. There was an accident on the road and I had to go about twenty minutes out of my way in order to reach the highway.…
