The Legacy Lives On
“The legacy is ongoing in some areas, and still causing controversy”-Jack Granatstein(Cheadle,2010). Pierre Elliot Trudeau was born on October 18th, 1919 in Montreal, Quebec(Encyclopaedia of World Biography, 2004). He was the youngest of three, son of Charles Trudeau, a French Canadian Lawyer, and Grace Elliot, an English Canadian. Trudeau had received top marks in school, which lead to his success in becoming a lawyer in 1943. He remained outside of the liberal party until 1965, where he became Minister of Justice, and finally became the 15th prime Minister of Canada 3 years later. Many francophones across Canada wanted to separate Quebec from Canada, and to make a separate country. Many people agreed with the idea, though many more did not. When it came to the proposition to the government, Trudeau said no because the idea was not precise enough. Later the idea started to really take flight across Canada which caught the attention of many French-Canadians. After a second attempt at requesting the idea, Trudeau once again was very confident in his rejection. Later people new that as long as Pierre was Prime Minister, they will not separate Quebec From Canada. Once Trudeau was beat in the 1979 Canadian election, Quebec believed that it was a perfect time to obtain sovereignty. Though the attempts to the separation were on track to succeeding, Trudeau was re-elected in 1980. Finally Trudeau managed to collapse the chances of sovereignty. Still to this day, Trudeau has succeeded in preventing Quebec from leaving Canada, and maintaining our multiculturalism. “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.”-Babe Ruth, and that is what Pierre Trudeau strived in.
