Furthermore, we live in a socially constructed world with many hierarchical structures. Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu conceptualizes this concept in his theory on capital. Upon looking at gender, we can see these hierarchical structures intersecting with race, age, and one’s sexual orientation. As chapter 21 states, “women are not victimized by gender alone, but by the historical and systematic denial of rights and privileges based on other differences as well” (Zinn, Sotelo, & Messer 170).
