Piercings Identity

During my Rhetoric class, I was having trouble coming up with a research topic. As I was fidgeting with my earrings, I realized why not do my research on why people have piercings? Piercings have always been part of my identity. Growing up my mom took me to have my ears pierced at JCPenny when I was barely one year old! In Hispanic culture, it is very common for parents to have their children’s ears pierced at a very young age. Most people who do not have piercings and who do not understand the motives behind the actions would agree that people are altering themselves motivated solely by rebellion. By conducting research on the topic, I will try to find evidence stating why people pierce themselves. I will do so by utilising websites, using scholarly articles, conducting an interview, and checking out books at the Iowa Public Library. As I grew up, I wanted a way to express myself. At the age of 10, I asked my mother if she could pierce my doubles and she said of course! My mother also has several piercings that she has done by herself throughout the years. About 2 weeks ago, I went back home to visit my family. I asked my mother why she had so many piercings? She replied “It lets me express who I am, and I love how they look on me , ”(Navarro).
