Picture Storybook Analysis

There are four components researchers believe teachers should do during the first reading of a picture storybook. Teachers should introduce the book, inserting/defining vocabulary, support analytical comments/questions and after reading questions. These component are here to help provide students with a better understanding of the story and the vocabulary. Based on book introductions, it's best for teachers to read the book in its entirety before identifying the different parts of the book. It's also best for the teacher to use dramatic pauses, gestures, expressions, variations in the pace of reading and eye contact to capture the interest of children. Prior to reading the book, teacher should focus on 5-10 vocabulary words he/she would like their students to understand as they listen to the book. The selections of words are very important to help the students understand the book. Five ways teachers can use to help enhance the child's vocabulary is to insert short phrases to define words, point to illustrations as you say the word, dramatic gestures, voice changes and pacing. But the most effective read alouds are when teachers slip the definition into the story without disrupting the flow of reading. During the second read aloud, teachers should highlight some vocabulary from the day before as well as introducing new vocabulary words. Teachers will continue to model analytical comments by asking more questions for additional inferences. Teachers may also want to ask students what they would do if they were in the same situation and ask questions beyond the explanation of the reading or provide what if questions to allow students to think deeper and feed off of each other's
