The study included children aged between 18 to 60 months with diagnosis of autism and with having little or no functional language. The 18 participants were divided into two groups which one was the experimental group and the other was the control group. In the six month study, the experimental group received the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) whereas the control group received the Conventional Language Therapy (CLT). Four assessments were used in this study, but only one assessment used technology. The importance of these assessments are to collect data and to evaluate if the PECS makes a positive difference in children’s communication who are diagnosed with ASD. …show more content…
This assessment assess a child’s strengths and weaknesses in all developmental areas, and can be used to determine if a child is in need of an early intervention or a treatment program. According to the study, this assessment tool assesses language subscale, receptive and expressive language, personal-social subscale, proficiency in the activities of daily living, level of independence, and interaction with other children (Lerna, Esposito, Conson, Russo & Massagli, 2012, p. 612). The GMDS assessment tool was presented in the screening process of selecting participants.

This assessment can also be used as an evaluation and diagnostic tool for individuals who have a mental disability with other handicaps. In this study, the VABS “represents a measure of personal and social self-sufficiency obtained through a semi-structured interview with the person’s parents or caregivers, and it examines the adaptive functioning in everyday life” (Lerna, Esposito, Conson, et.al, 2012, p. 616). This assessment is also used to gather parent report of child communication and social abilities at home and in the community.
Unstructured Free-Play with Examiner (UFPE)
UFPE is an assessment tool to collect data on specific variables; for example, cooperative play, eye contact, joint attention, requests and initiation. This assessment is performed by professional examiners who have a Master’s degree in clinical or developmental psychology and received training by an exceptional clinician using video sample of children not involved in the study. The observers were blind to the purposes of the study and the treatment assignment.
