Picture Exchange Communication System: Autism Spectrum Disorders
The study included children aged between 18 to 60 months with diagnosis of autism and with having little or no functional language. The 18 participants were divided into two groups which one was the experimental group and the other was the control group. In the six month study, the experimental group received the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) whereas the control group received the Conventional Language Therapy (CLT). Four assessments were used in this study, but only one assessment used technology. The importance of these assessments are to collect data and to evaluate if the PECS makes a positive difference in children’s communication who are diagnosed with ASD.

This assessment is also used to gather parent report of child communication and social abilities at home and in the community.
Unstructured Free-Play with Examiner (UFPE)
UFPE is an assessment tool to collect data on specific variables; for example, cooperative play, eye contact, joint attention, requests and initiation. This assessment is performed by professional examiners who have a Master’s degree in clinical or developmental psychology and received training by an exceptional clinician using video sample of children not involved in the study. The triad of impairments has been used for 30 years and has been the main principle that has been used to understand autism. Recently, the triad model has been reduced to only two areas of impairment and is know known as the the dyad. The dyad's features only two areas which are social communication and social interaction and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interest or activities - including sensory activities. Despite the new model being used there are still many researchers that prefer the triad and see the positives of using this original model. These positive points include the fact that the triad identifies more underlying impairments and this allows the diagnosis to be made with the most accuracy, furthermore, the model…
