Picture By Kid Rock Analysis

Introduction: The song I have chosen to analyze is called Picture by Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow. This song is a relationship story that is told in both points of view. A couple breaks up a long-term relationship, and are both trying to forget about each other, but having photos from the relationship makes that very difficult. It hurts both of them to look at the picture of the other one, so they put them away and out of sight hoping to move on with their lives. They both handled the situation differently and are separated for a long while, until they finally realize they still have chemistry and are reunited.
Gender and Sexuality: The gender role orientation of the characters in this song would have to be both masculine and feminine. The male character is singing to the female character and vice versa, therefore the male shows masculine traits in his verses, and the female shows feminine traits in her verses. When the male character says, “been fueling up on cocaine and whisky, wish I had a good girl to miss me,” helps shows the listeners the masculinity orientation of the male character. Commitment is deciding to love and maintain that love, which is shown towards the end of the song where both parties agreed to change their ways and, “come back home.” Intimacy is the feelings of emotional closeness, which is also shown throughout the entirety of the song. The fact that both partners struggle with the breakup, and have a hard time with seeing pictures of each other, helps show that they are emotionally close. The “love” in this song could also be labeled as Misattribution of arousal. The male character could have mistaken what really made him happy, and ended things with the female character for something else.
