People experienced the middle passage in a very tight situation because according to document D it shows a diagram. This diagram shows which floor the slaves are in and how they all fit together. Which to me would be quite uncomfortable because imagine that you’re one of them and you have to be in the same smooshed position 24/7. This placed was very packed that they gave up going to the bathroom in the bucket provided since it still spills either way. Not only that but the rooms have limited measurements for each person for example: each man is allowed 6’ by 1’4’, women are allowed 5’10’ by 1’4’, and children 5’ by 1’2’.…
Some of the major weaknesses of the book were that the book lacked in visual examples thus preventing the reader to fully grasp the author’s examples. Visuals would have allowed he reader to understand the author’s points and would have also added a sense of “liveliness” to the…
The experience in the middle passage was terrible. According to Alexander Falconbridge who was a doctor on slave ship, said it was the most disgusting thing or dreadful. In Document C Alexander’s experience in the slave ship was something that he would never go back to doing. “The hardships and inconveniences suffered by the negroes during the passage, are hard to describe… The floor of their rooms was so covered with blood and mucus because of the flux, that it resembled a slaughter - house” (Document C).…

As long as the Ewells and whoever back them up are alive, this tragic style of life will remain.…

As he follows the river on his raft, he is unknowingly also paddling his way down the river into adulthood. Every selection he makes on what to do influences all of his other decisions, as well as many other factors. In the novelette The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a boy’s loss of innocence through the growth of his moral compass, rites of passage taken, and the factors that cause this growth of persona.…
Symbolism is used many times throughout literature but many people are using symbolism incorrectly. They are expecting it to only hold one meaning, well they're wrong. Set in California near the Salinas River during The Great Depression, the novel begins when two grown men come looking in search of new jobs on a ranch. In Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, both the authors use symbolism to show that it is related to an action or event experienced through individuals imaginations with a possible range of meanings and interpretations. In chapter 12 of Foster’s text, he uses caves and rivers as symbols of various interpretation and meanings that can only be understood using the tools, such as; questions, experiences, history, pre…
Humans possessing ownership of other human beings? Sounds like a line your parents would throw at you in the midst of a heated argument, doesn’t it? One line of defense every parent uses is the “You’re my kid, therefore I own you and can tell you what to do.” And us kids think that statement is pretty unfair, considering that we are our own person and should be able to whatever we so please. It’s a long shot, but that’s one way we can somewhat relate to slaves in the past; even though, the situations we endure today can’t compare to the ones that were endured during the long years of slavery in Americas past.…
“One art” by Elizabeth Bishop is a form of a villanelle, a repetitive poem that consists of nineteen lines that usual consists of two repeating rhymes and two refrains. In the poem the speaker is ranting in a letter to a loved one about how losing is easy and compares it as a skillful art. It is not apparent that the conversation is going on but at the end of the poem it is obvious that there is some sort of communication happening. The speaker of the poem repeats:” the art of losing isn’t hard to master” () and” disaster” () in the poem, to explain how losing can be tough but also something that can easily happen . Throughout the poem, the speaker shares things he loses, from everyday items to the spending of time badly.…
In A Tale of Two Cities the author, Charles Dickens, uses symbolism to connect the significance of the theme “recalled to life,” in books the first and second. In the novel the characters were beginning to experience feelings of disloyalty to their country. The commoners living in the two cities were starving and poor. They wanted change and wanted to bring life back into their broken society. In the story there are many examples of people or ideas, that are brought back to life, and they all intertwine.…
To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…
I found the approach of using a graphic history much more engaging with an audience than the transcript that was presented in Part II of the book. Although I believe the style Getz used could have taken away from the authenticity of the transcript, because it felt as if I was being drug away from the main point of the story. He included the transcript and the historical context, which helped fill many of the blank understandings of the relationships of the Asante societies. I it found interesting that the judge, William Melton did not understand the cultural aspects of the case he was ruling. This is important because James Brew, who represented Eddoo, used tactics in order to confuse both Abina as well as…
Shakespeare wrote this play about dreams that were forgotten or put off. The significance be of the word “Dream” in the title is by that, the readers could guess that the story is going to be unrealistic like a dream. And also the theme is important because they are related to the bizarre, magical events in the forest and the theme shows much of the characters’ happiness and depression directly throughout the play. At the end of the play, the characters realized that the dream of a house was the most important dream because it united the family. Many characters have mentioned dreams throughout the play.…
Throughout Jane Eyre’s strenuous life, she lived in five different locations. Each location symbolizes a certain time period in Jane’s life and represents her quality of life in that place. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Jane grew up as an orphan living with her aunt and cousins at Gateshead. Because of her aunt’s cruelty and intolerance of Jane, the orphan was sent off to Lowood institution where she spent the next eight years.…
It is an obvious and well known fact that Swift used much satire in Gulliver’s Travels. He is criticizing and attacking humanity through this technique (Orwell). While Swift criticized the people of England in his piece, he most certainly got criticized for Gulliver’s Travels because many critics had much to say. Literary criticism can help a reader decide if a book is worth the read or not. For the most part, while that is just one person’s opinion, it can make quite an impact on a societal, or overall view of the book if other literary critics have opinions on the book that parallel.…
