Pickles So Again Poem

So again, this poem reminds me of my lovely cats and this time I attached a picture of them. The line in particular that reminded me of them was “His eyes, green as ringstones” as Pickles’ eyes are distinctively bright green. War is sometimes the main reason for people skedaddling their homes. Before war or other catastrophe, refugees had good lives, they had everything that they needed, good clothes, houses, food, and financial progress, but after war their lives got twisted ‘inside out’, they had to skedaddle their homes. In Inside Out And Back Again page 1 stanza 2, it says, “Every Tet we eat sugary lotus seeds and glutinous rice cakes. We wear all new clothes even underneath”. In ‘Children of War’ by Arthur Brice, real refugee kids talk about their experience, “After the war started, you could not even go out of your house.…

Part one of Father and Child, ‘Barn Owl’, explores the impact of life-changing experiences, such as the loss of innocence due to the deliberate killing of a bird, and how it can be an important memory later on in life as it provides insight into dealing with negative experiences. The poem opens with ‘daybreak’, foreshadowing an awakening to come, and ‘blessed by the sun’ symbolises the dawning of new knowledge. The persona, a young child, uses an arrogant tone by referring to herself as a ‘wisp-haired judge’ and ‘master of life and death’. Here, the use of binary opposites is symbolic of light and dark and the cyclical nature of death. This godlike and authoritative position is quickly contrasted with the desolate tone of ‘afraid….. lonely child’.…

Margarita Engle’s poem, “The Life of a Digger,” and Erica Funkhouser’s poem, “My Father’s Lunch,” reveal how life as manual laborers are filled with hard and strenuous work. Additionally, both poems concern specific people to show the differences in the repercussions of their work. In Engle’s poem, Henry the digger, finds his job leaves him feeling undignified, whereas in Funkhouser’s poem, the speakers father is rewarded with a good meal and his children’s appreciation. For my transformative work, I took a poem and created a parody of it. The poem I chose to create a parody of was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. This original poem is for little kids, to educate and entertain them; what little kid doesn’t love a rhyming poem that makes them giggle a little? The original piece talks about green eggs and ham while my poem talks about Trump and Pence. With this as well, my character is Hence-I-Tense where the original character is Sam-I-Am.…

We pride ourselves in being the country that offers a fair go for all, the country that was built upon egalitarianism, opportunity and the hope of a better life, the country of mateship where multiculturalism and diversity is embraced. These values act as the cornerstones of the Australian identity as we know it, and placed Australia on the map for the rest of the world to see. However the mantra of acceptance does not hold true for all. Whether born in Australia with foreign heritage or recently migrated, some members of society still struggle to feel fully integrated within our community. Robbed of their own identity and the chance to contribute to Australia’s.…

In the story “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” is important to most of us living because people that are Hispanic or Latino tend to have an accent. If people tend to not talk English correctly without an accent they would likely start laughing. One of the many points in the story is linguistic terrorism, which meant for her that if a Spanish language is different from the other doesn’t mean that one is less authentic. It means that different people had different ways of talking to each other like the word “Vato” and such, more that only some Spanish people would understand because they switch it a bit from the authentic one.…

The Effectiveness of “Winter Stars” By Larry Levis The poem “Winter Stars” by Larry Levis starts out depicting a story that a boy is remembering from his child hood. Levis vividly depicts the boy’s father “breaking a man’s hand” (Levis) on a piece of farming equipment because the man named “Rubén Vásquez” (Levis) attempted to kill him with a well described knife. His father then proceeds, with no empathy, to grab some lunch and listen to some music. The boy then contemplated the meaning of life and wondered “why anybody would risk there life” (Levis).…
