Pickles are a staple in American culture. They are put on numerous different foods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, sandwiches, chips (pickle flavoring), and even eaten by themselves. While pickles have become an American staple, where did they first originate and how did they grow in popularity? The word pickle originates from the Dutch word “… pekel or northern German pókel, which means ‘salt’ or ‘brine’…” (Avey). The origin of the pickle, however, is not found in Germany or the Netherlands, but in India. According to Tori Avey’s article in pbs.org, pickles have dated “… as far back as 2030 BC when cucumbers from… native India were pickled in the Tigris Valley” (Avey).
