The determination of children’s health outcomes and their precursors such as healthy eating, is a difficult process in which individuals must consider various academic resources to develop an appropriate perspective. However, it is in determining the value of these resources, regarding their impact on our understanding of early childhood health, where the problem lies. This review will critically assess the articles; ‘Food consumption patterns in preschool children,’ (Pabayo, Spence, Casey & Storey, 2012) and ‘Advertising and fictional media effects on healthy eating choices in early and later childhood,’ (Ferguson, Contreras & Kilburn, 2014) as well as the report, ‘Munch & Move: Evidence and Evaluation Summary,’ (Lockeridge, Innes-Hughes,…
Eating is part of an organism’s life. Everything that lives and breathes in some way has to take in nutrition through the food they eat. Food and eating food is a necessary fact of life because everything needs to be sustained, and that is how organisms were made to gain those nutrients. Eating began as a necessary survival tool, however as people and populations have grown, shifted, moved, and changed people have begun eating in family settings all around the dinner table as more of a social event than purely for survival. As time progressed, more and more families began to have both parents working.…
Child abuse is unfortunately extremely common within society. A lot of the time, abusers were abused as a child, and they are continuing the circle. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn is an example of how child abuse can affect people as adults, years after the abuse had ceased, as well as the effects on someone who is currently being abused. Similarly, the play Fences has characters that have similar backgrounds, yet the way they functioned as adults sometimes very different. Salinger confronts this type of issue in his Literary Criticism on Sharp Objects.…

Introduction: Webb County, Texas is predominantly Hispanic community along the South Texas border. The majority of the population is economically disadvantaged, which affects their ability to live a healthy lifestyle. The average median household income in Webb County is $35,659, and the poverty rate is approximately 31.8% of the total population, which is double the state average.1 As a consequence, school-aged children face the nutritional problem of being food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the inability to find or acquire food in order to obtain the sufficient amount of nutrients to be healthy.…
According to the World Health Organization, health is described as the complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, and not the just the absence of disease and infirmity”, (AJOT). Because disease in general, encompasses many areas of affliction, it has been a primary concern of America to maintain the total wellness of its citizens. There have been numerous initiatives implemented to address different diseases and the general infliction of disease, broad-spectrum. But many of these programs overlook small details and instead, only address one large issue. One of the rising epidemics is childhood obesity.…
Across the nation, American’s have begun to notice that their favorite pairs of jeans seem fit just a little too snug for their liking all of a sudden. Many are quick to jump to conclusions and blame the fast food industries, but are they the true issue here? Obesity has made its presence well known to many of today’s Americans. Along with larger clothes and slower walking paces, obesity comes with many other health risks that can easily destroy the everyday life of its victim, and, in severe cases, even bring that life to an end. It is no secret that the prevalence of fast food companies has increased dramatically in the past decade.…
I choose to use thumb sucking as my issue for childhood development. I think this is an interesting issue, and I picked it because even as a child this was something that I didn't understand why people did it. I never sucked my thumb, and so this seemed strange to me. I remember being in grade school and there were still kids that sucked their thumbs and they got made fun of for it. I am pretty sure that the ridicule that they got for that probably made them stop doing that, but I would guess that they developed other issues to replace the thumb sucking issue.…
An Analysis of Dennis Foster 's “The Little Children Can Be Bitten” Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker is a seminal piece of Gothic horror fiction. The novel 's portrayal of an undead master (the titular character) being chased by Van Helsing and his band of vampire hunters has been consumed for over a century. Dennis Foster 's critical article “The little children can be bitten: A Hunger for Dracula” uses a psychoanalytic approach to analyze this influential work of literature. In his article, Foster makes a compelling, successful argument about the nature of the novel and how it relates to the inner workings of the human mind. He posits that the visceral, unchained figure of Dracula represents the innate desire for the mother and a return…
341,000 Minnesotans struggle everyday to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables due to the lack of access and poverty (Jeremy Olson). This statistic ranks Minnesota the 7th worst food desert in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food deserts as “low-income areas where grocery stores and supermarkets that sell fresh produce are over one mile away in urban areas or 10 miles away in rural areas.” Today, there are over 23 million people living in food deserts (Susie Quick). As a society, the number of food deserts needs to decrease because it leads to other health issues, such as obesity, and then can be solved by implementing a program that offers grants for mobile gardens, farmers markets and nutrition classes.…
As alluded to in her book, A Disease Called Childhood, in chapter seven, entitled “Let Food be Thy Medicine”, Marilyn Wedge claims that though there are some legitimate diagnoses of ADHD that are in need of attention and possibly medication, a child’s diet may be a sizable factor of their behavior. Wedge cites John E. Huxsahl from Mayo Clinic, using his article on processed foods to help her claim that food consumption can have a relation to ADHD. I agree with Wedge’s argument on multiple occasions that I will refer to throughout this essay; including personal experiences, experiments, and how other countries tackle additives in food. When my brother, Konnor, was younger, he was diagnosed with multiple behavioral disorders due to his inability…
Junk food is characterized as an empty calorie food (Deepthi, 2012). When consumed regularly, it can negatively affect the growth and development of children. ADHD affects 20% of children under the age of 18 (Kim, 2014). ADHD is more prevalent in children than it was a decade ago. The lifespan of children is decreasing because of their lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits.…
Eating children? That went too far, but that was the thing that was needed to protest against the conditions Ireland lived because of the bad treatment of England. Ireland had beggars and starving children everywhere, money was short in supply because all of the money was sent to the rich landlord in England, some policies of England kept the Irish poor and hungry. Eating children will be unbearable, that was a thing that no one even should think about, a thing that would be unforgivable.…
In a nation leading in obesity, healthy eating is more important than ever, but some individuals may not know where to start with all the ads for new dieting tricks and the variety of foods to choose from. Today I will be discussing what causes poor eating, what makes eating healthier unappealing and what ways can one make healthy eating a part of their everyday life. What causes poor eating? Three main factors that contribute to poor eating are stress, bad habits that are instilled from a young age and mindless eating.…
Nutrition Throughout Life Good nutrition throughout the life span is essential if infants are to grow into healthy adults with successful development into old age. However, with the shocking rates of malnutrition and obesity, it appears that infants, children, and adults are not attaining sufficient nutritional status. Concern over poor nutrition has become more apparent in the last ten years (Shepherd, 2008). Nutrition, whether healthy or poor, can affect an individual’s biological, psychological, and socioemotional development throughout the life span.…
