Scene one - Picking up pepper
(In a small town in Iowa Kate and Sam, aged 3 and 6 were two children who desperately wanted a dog more than anything. Their parents Scott and Laura both loved dogs but weren’t sure if the children were ready but finally caved and let them get a dog. Everybody was set on getting a small female dogs but nobody knew what. The family discovered that a litter of miniature schnauzers were born only about an hour away so they decided to drive over and see them. As soon as we got there everybody was in love. We decided on a name and Pepper came home with us. She went on all of our adventures with us and grew up with us. Pepper was the sweetest dog any of us could have wanted and she went through so much with our family our happiest and

Scott - We’re not too far awa-- [A car in the street adjacent of Scott runs a red light forcing him to hit the brakes hard] [Worried] Sam, are you okay?
Sam - Yeah I’m fine [looks around confused] but I think pepper went out the window.
Scott - Wha-- Where’d she go? [He looks to the woman in the car behind him eyes wide open] I think Pepper may have been hit.
Sam - No she’s right there [He points to the homes on the grass across the street. Pepper is trotting away from the car] I think she’s running away!
Scott - She’s just headed home we will meet here there.
[The two of them turned around and went back to the house where Laura was working in the garden]
Sam - [tearing up] P-Pepper jumped out of the window and -- and ran away.
Laura - I’m sure she’ll be headed home very soon. They’re pack animals they like to stay in one place. Don’t worry about her [She hugs him while he cries]
Sam- I’m going to wait on the porch for her until she comes back [He walks inside]
[Hours pass as Sam sits on the wooden steps worried]
Laura - Sam, you need to come in and go to school
