According to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, children progress through four stages of development: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and formal operational stage. Each of these stages is characterized by a differing levels of abstract reasoning capacity and the ability to view and understand the world.

There are several differences between the thinking patterns of a 3-year-old preschooler and a 9-year-old student according to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development.
