Pina Bausch was born Philippina Bausch in 1940 in Solingen, Germany. Bausch was a modern dance performer, and choreographer. When Pina was 15 she was accepted into the Folkwang Academy, this school was directed one of the pioneers of combining dance and drama into a new kind of theatre called Tanztheatre his name was Kurt Jooss. Two years after being in new York Bausch joined Jooss new company called Folkwang Ballett as a soloist and had the liberty of assisting Jooss on many of the pieces that were shown she was so great at this that in 1968 she has the opportunity to choreograph a piece of her own called Fragmente and eventually in 1969 she became the artistic director of the company. Pina Bausch believes that her role is to convey feelings and emotions into dance, now this is why the pieces that are performed have such a meaningful factor towards it and the audience feels the emotions that the performer is showing, this is what Pina wants the audience to feel as if they are going on the journey with the performer. Pina once stated "It is almost unimportant whether a work finds an understanding audience. One has to do it because one believes that it is the right thing to do.
