Emotions in Hues

Other than being painted all over the earth and giving beauty to all objects, color can hold a deeper meaning than what many people acknowledge. Recurring color represents a repeating emotion or meaning. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, there are several colors representing feelings that accompany Pi and his journey in the lifeboat. He does so with only the company of a tiger and his own thoughts. Whenever the color orange is brought up, there is a feeling of hope, a reassurance that Pi’s survival will be successful. When the color green is mentioned, the mood is set to a calm, peaceful time, where nothing is out of order and Pi’s troubles are forgotten. Whenever Pi sees black, he slowly loses hope of surviving. The darkness mainly approaches him at night, when he hears a haunting “drumming sound, coming from the darkness beyond” (156). The blackness surrounds him and erases his motivation and determination to focus on what’s important. He becomes intimidated by the color and feels like all hope is lost. Due to the darkness surrounding him, “everything disappeared”, including “[his] own body” (118). No one can see him at night, so his chances of being rescued by a passing ship decrease. His mind is taken over by this thought and he feels invisible. During these “dark hours”, the sea becomes reckless and “tossed [him] about” (157). Pi feels like an object being thrown around by a large mass of darkness. He becomes lost in the sea of black he has been drifting on for so long and when night approaches, he feels small and hopeless. Not only do his surroundings turn dark, his own vision blackens as well. Over time, Pi becomes blind and can “see nothing but darkness” (250). Although the darkness would normally fade away when the sun would rise, Pi is now stuck with the darkness with no relief. Now he has not only lost his sense of sight, but of his own body. He can not see anything at all compared to the little he was able to see when it was night. This makes him unable to do certain activities and worsens his health. This completely diminishes his motivation and hope for a

My initial reaction upon looking over Turner’s “Slave Ship” was that it appeared to be a beautiful landscape. The way the sky looks over the ship and the horizon line is really striking and powerful. However, as you start to look down you start to see the reason for the name of “Slave Ship”. Along the bottom of the painting you can see body parts of humans in the water. There are hands and feet, the foot on the bottom right has a shackle still attached to the ankle and there appear to be fish eating at the body.…

In the year 1836, artist Thomas Cole created his masterpiece, “The Oxbow” with oil on canvas. His painting is one of many that showcase the transition in American Art History to one that idealized American Romanticism. Up until just a few years before this piece was painted, Americans sought to be like Europe and focused their art on Ancient Ruins and ladies with perfect faces. During this time America was so new and fresh yet settlers just burned and plowed through all vegetation. But they would soon recognize the beauty and value of their land and artists like Thomas Cole and some of his students would be there to capture that moment.…

Once you experience something of such great significance, it is hard to let that go and move on. This universal theme can be seen in both the song “Want You Back” by 5 Seconds of Summer, and the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. In “Want You Back” the band sings about a girl whom they have left and will always want back. In “All Summer in a Day” the author tells a story about students on Venus, who are in the absence of the sun, and are grieving the loss of it too. In both of these selections, the band and the author use imagery and repetition to convey the theme.…

Darkness is a motif that appears again in the second quarter of the book, beginning with the secret storage room Max is hiding in so he does not get taken away or killed. It represents the desperateness of Max’s situation, and it appears again as Max is hiding in the basement of the Hubermann household. Perhaps darkness could also be a symbol of safety, as the secret storage room and the Hubermann’s basement are hiding places so that Max is kept secure and away from danger. Another symbol I found interesting in this part of the book would have to be Hans’ accordion.…
