The Future Of Pi Is No Symbol In Mathematics

Superior Essays
Math is about numbers; these numbers span from positive to negative, rational to irrational and complex to imaginary. The main number that this essay will be looking at is the irrational number known as pi. Many different civilizations throughout history have had their own approximations for pi. In fact one of the first aspects in defining the number known as pi was coming up with a variable that could represent this number. Π was decided to be the variable that stuck and its origins can be traced back to the Greeks (Wilson). Pi is a concept that can be traced back to ancient times to the middle ages and even today many computer software programs continue to evolve pi. William L. Schaaf said, "Probably no symbol in mathematics has evoked as much mystery, romanticism, misconception and human …show more content…
In 1945 D. F Ferguson pressed the limits of computer calculation of pi with a years worth of work on the number leading to 808 digits of pi (Wilson). Many computer programmers and mathematicians followed Ferguson’s computer work to continually crunch out digits for pi in attempt to create software that could calculate digits of pi faster and faster. In 1976 Eugene Salamin put the final mark on his algorithm, which constantly doubles the number of accurate digits with each iteration of pi (Wilson). Today the world is blessed with the current record being 68,719,470,000 digits found by Kanada and Takahashi in 1999 (Wilson). Even to this day mathematicians are still trying to search and search for more digits of pi. The relevance of this search is minimal as the practical application of using more then 100 digits of pi is very minimal. A more important feat that mathematicians are currently looking into is a pattern within pi. The question that leaves many mathematicians scratching their heads is there away to pick up pi in the middle of its strand of digits and quickly identify it as being part of

Part B: During the children’s early years, they learn that mathematics helps people making sense of their environments through play, investigations, real-life situations, and focused learning experiences. Children come to school with different experiences about mathematics (Anghileri, 2006; Yelland, Butler, & Diezmann, 1999). Many children enjoy singing number names, identifying how big objects and people are, labelling shapes, and using their developing mathematical understandings to think and reason (Reys, Lindquist, Lambdin, Smith, Rogers, Falle, Frid, & Bennett, 2012; Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, 1997). In the education system there is a framework describing the children’s mathematical development and expected levels…

The definition of mathematics anxiety is is a phenomenon that is often considered when examining students' problems in mathematics. In the article “ Stop Telling Kids You’re Bad At Math” by Petra Bonfert-Taylor it talks about how in today’s society we are giving a bad image of mathematics which is causing children to have anxiety. Studies have shown that students and children tind to get the mathematics anxiety (MA) from teachers mainly, but can get it from parents. “we are passing on from generation to generation the phobia for mathematics and with that are priming our children for mathematical anxiety.…

In his book, The Joy of Pi, David Blatner, the author of fifteen books on various subjects, attempts to explain why mathematicians continue to approximate pi to this day. He believes that they continue to do so because it poses a challenge, and it is in human nature to conquer that challenge. He tries to relay this belief to his readers through a number of different methods including, a history of pi, explaining why pi is fascinating, and how pi appears in the natural world. His writing style, text format, book format, and content all excellently cater towards the non-mathematically oriented, but still educated audience. David Blatner’s book, The Joy of Pi, attempts to show the reader, who may not necessarily be a mathematician, why mathematicians…

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

5.1 It is always incredible to observe how a civilization can decline, usually taking down academic progress with it just as the founding of civilizations provided the stability to begin study. This case seems less clear cut than most, as the city of Alexandria itself seemed to experience a prosperous and stable period during the Pax Romana, but theoretical studies suffered because the Roman empire brought different values. It is interesting how much of a difference culture made, especially when the difference in preference between Greeks and Romans, respectively preferring math and engineering, seems so arbitrary. As the book pointed out, not one single Roman became a famous mathematician during the era. The rise of Christianity also turned…

Chinenyenwa Amaechi Dahiya AP Calculus 16 October 2015 Every student who has ever asked an older adult for help with their math homework is very familiar with the phrase “This is not the type of math I did growing up”. The mathematics we have today greatly differs from that of earlier generations and time periods due to the dynamic nature of this field of study. Throughout history, many important individuals have contributed to the field of mathematics and have helped develop the theories, postulates and mathematical rules which are widely accepted today. From the quadratic formula to the trigonometric functions, these people have revolutionized the way we view mathematics in unimaginable ways.…

Connecting with peers and professors has allowed me to not only learn from but also contribute to a community dedicated to academic progress and mathematical achievement. Also, involvement in my chapter has availed me opportunities to take on leadership positions, like Chapter Secretary, Vice President, and President, each of which honed my leadership skills. Organizing chapter events and meetings, participating in a community service event on campus, attending mathematics competition training sessions, and helping with recruitment efforts are just a few highlights from my chapter involvement.…

Throughout history, one is in a constant dilemma to pursue a life dedicated to either science and logic, or religion and morality. Some individuals are able to overcome this dilemma and create a balance between both science and religion, thus living life in harmony of both aspects. In the novel and film adaptation of Life of Pi by Yann Martel and Ang Lee, it is understood how Pi is influenced by the delicate balance between science and religion. It is evident how Pi guides the future of his life, and that he chooses how he lives out his life. In addition, throughout his struggles Pi tries to maintain the presence of God and searches for meaning where there is none, thus leading to the realization that he must embrace logic and his primal needs…

Students are constantly asking the question, “Why do we have to learn this?” As Christian educators it is important that we are always ready to give an answer to this most important question. Perhaps the best answer is found in Isaiah 40:26 which says, “Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.” Or we can look at Hosea who gives God’s warning when he writes, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). No matter which Scripture passage we turn to, there is always an answer for why we apply ourselves to the pursuit of knowledge and we must always “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).…
