Phytoplankton Vs Water

For centuries mankind has been utilizing the ocean as a bottomless pit. Once the ocean has been destroyed there is no way to restore it to it’s natural state. People are now starting to realize that the ocean as well as all other bodies of water are vulnerable. Lake Erie was toxic enough to kill the fish that once inhabited the great lake and, the constant outlet into the ocean in return polluting the ocean. “Today hardly a creek or a river in the world reaches the ocean without carrying a constant flow of non degradable chemicals from industrial, urban, or agricultural areas” (page 342). Everything that was created by the earth was made to be recomposed, recycled and reused. All of these chemicals are now effecting the animals that call the ocean their home. “No breathing species could live on this planet until the surface layer of the ocean was filled with phytoplankton”(page 347). All life on earth depended upon this simplistic organism to evolve and sustain life. Phytoplankton provides food for the fish and most importantly oxygen to breathe. Without oxygen nothing would be able to live though the phytoplankton is not our only source of oxygen it is a major contributor. “Pesticides have begun to enter the flesh of penguins in the Antarctic and the brains of polar bears and the blubber of whales in the Arctic, all subsisting on plankton and plankton eating crustaceans and fish in areas far from cities and farmland” (page 347). By contaminating the ocean humans are effecting an entire ecosystem and if this continues the results will be catastrophic. “A dead ocean means a dead planet” (page 348).
