The level of comprehension of language is based on intellectual capacity, age, and experiences. The basics of speech start with sounds and breaking them down into manageable units (Goldstein, 2010).
Infants start to develop taste, smell, touch, sight, and hearing all while still developing in the womb. The different manner in which adults speak to children and infants is called infant directed speech, known as IDS (Matsuda, Y. 2011). Infant directed speech consisting of slower and higher pitched sounds will attract an infant’s attention and will gain a reaction out of an infant. High pitched happy tones, and melodies will result in cooing and smiles from an infant because they have the ability to comprehend positive sounds and react. When an infant hears loud disruptive sounds or arguing they will react with load cries that will let an adult know their disturbed by the disruptive sound. Studies indicate that infants who are exposed to IDS develop a quicker understanding for spoken words, and have more positive developed emotions then children who were never exposed to infant directed speech (Matsuda, Y.
