Physics of Skiing
Science research paper
Johanna Kelly

For my science fair project, the topic I wanted to study were the physics of skiing. The question I’m going to do for my experiment is, does wax affect the speed of skiing? I’m also planning on testing the wax in different conditions, and at different slope angles. This seems like a very interesting project, because I really like skiing and snowboarding. Last year my project wasn’t very interesting to me, so I’m glad I picked a topic that seems more interesting for me. In order to do my experiment, I have to do some research. The topics I researched were wax and different types of wax. Also I will want to research the physics of skiing. I might also test it out on a snowboard.

An analysis of the physics is useful in order to understand how this is done. A skier maximizes his speed by minimizing resistance to motion, both from air resistance and snow resistance. A skier minimizes his air resistance (drag) by reducing his projected frontal area. He does this by going into a crouch position, which (along with improving his ability to hold balance) results in a lower drag force. This results in a direction opposite his velocity, slowing him …show more content…

Jake Burton Jake Burton is the owner and founder of Burton Snowboards. The growth and popularity snowboarding sees today is directly related to Burton, as it was his vision and perseverance that has made the sport into a worldwide success story. Jake did not invent snowboarding, but instead capitalized on a product called the “snurf”, a freestanding board with a rope and no bindings, where the rider could slide down hills with little control. Jake saw immediate potential for an industry and sport, but not by the “snurfing” company who marketed their product as if it was a “hula hoop or something”. After a failed attempt at making the University of Colorado’s ski team, and a stint at grooming and exercising racehorses, Jake enrolled in New York University to study economics.…

Sullivan Jackson Kachigan Physics 16 February, 2018 SAHC: SJ How Mass Effects Luge Luge is an unusual sport where the rider or riders on a sled-like device are barreling down an ice track at speeds up to 97 mph. Because of these tremendous speeds, one may think that the rider(s) must be light and nimble so they could glide through the course with ease. However, this is the complete opposite of reality and in the physics world, it makes complete sense. As you may have guessed, the objective in this sport is to get down the track at a faster time than your opponents. To do this, you obviously need velocity to achieve that goal.…

Rheanna iskierka hour 2 Cheesey plan My problem: if I change the fat percentage in mozzarella cheese then the browning outcome will be different. Why I’m interested: i am interested in this because I like eating cheese that is not burnt so if we find the right cheese that browns to a great crisp. And secondly because if we know a good fat percentage that does not burn in the oven and stays crispy and tasty without the charcoal we could use that so we can use that for an enjoying meal without burntness and fat is a really healthy thing to eat on a daily basis. This is important to anyone who wants to save money and have better health.…

Objective: The purpose of this lab was to examine Newton 's second law by observing the relationship between force and acceleration in a friction-free environment and to illustrate the concept of mass. The experiment was conducted in such a way to reduce friction. In order to simulate this environment an air-cushioned track was set-up for the glider to ride on a pocket of air without being in contact with the metal track. In addition, this glider will have masses attached to it as well as a hanger which will act as part of the same system.…

This is because glycerin will prevent the snow from falling rapidly as it is a ‘thick’ fluid. In other words, it has a high viscosity, but water has a low viscosity (low thickness), thus glycerin will thicken the water (changes the water). Therefore, this mixture of liquids inside the beaker decelerates the snow because the gravity is pulling it down. Suggest what the results would be if the hypothesis was supported if the hypothesis was supported, the object will take the longest time to reach the base of the beaker when mixed in the water and glycerin solution.…
