Objective: Using the breath as a source of inner strength (Idea Health and Fitness Association, 2011, para. 2). After exploring a unit about the core muscles in science, students will be able to connect their thoughts and ideas to a unit on yoga, where they will experience breathing exercises and stretching activities.

WARM UP: (20 minutes)
Opening (5 min.)
• Opening Science Hook: o “Research has shown that athletes with higher core stability have a lower risk of injury” (Kuhland, n.d. Para. 7). o Core muscle strength: not only important for individual fitness but for everyday life and acts as the foundation of your body (Bridges, Davila, & Randolph, 2008)
• Breathing exercise in either a seated or reclined position
• Have students place their hands on their bellies and breathe while observing the movement of their bellies (explain to students proper breathing: when they breathe in, their diaphragm expands like a balloon inflating, and when they breathe out, a balloon
