Dearest Friends and Family,

I hope this letter finds you well. I write to you today to talk about an amazing opportunity and to ask for your support as I take the next steps in my pursuit of college. With less than a year left to apply and decide what university I will attend, I am trying to take as many new opportunities that emerge.

Since around two years old, I have held an interest in medicine. To my mother’s horror, I tried to always make her feel better while she was battling cancer. Despite my ineffective methods as a young child, I have not lost my drive for helping others.

I plan on becoming a nurse practitioner or physician assistant, and while I know my direction could change with further exposure to other medical fields, I know

It is designed to help students like me understand their place in the medical field and get first-hand experience shadowing physicians. As you may know, getting serious shadowing experience in the States is both extremely competitive and rigorously regulated especially for a High School student like me. Yet, pre-med students are required to have shadowing experiences, along with unique extracurricular pursuits, to get accepted into medical school. An Atlantis Fellowship satisfies both needs.

I applied one afternoon on a whim, not expecting to be considered for this highly-competitive opportunity, underwent two interviews the following weeks, and was thankfully accepted soon afterward. Through this Fellowship, I will gain the opportunity to: shadow international physicians, rotate weekly through various specialties, shadow for 15-20 hours per week, go on group excursions to experience my host country’s culture, connect with other students around the world with similar interests as me, grow personally through this international experience, and volunteer to help tutor English to hospital staff.
I will be traveling to Cuenca, Ecuador for three weeks, and I am so excited to see healthcare from this new cultural

With a mission devoted to providing an unparalleled medical education, focused upon the improvement of community health, service to underserved populations, and promotion of diversity, I believe Morehouse School of Medicine can provide me with a rich medical experience that will lend itself well to my development as a medical student and aspiring physician. An emphasis on serving underserved groups, such as minorities, and addressing current health disparities were my primary motivations for applying to Morehouse School of Medicine. Following residency, I hope to practice medicine in a community limited in terms of affordability, accessibility, and availability of healthcare options. In such a community, I can utilize my medical education for the purpose of addressing the health concerns and disparities affecting those in society who are often ignored and suffer in health as a result.…

Personal Statement Growing up in rural Colombia in the midst of the coffee region where individuals from all over the country, especially indigenous and those with limited resources would come to tender the coffee fields, I realize now that it gave me a view of how healthcare is not a right but a luxury. The political turmoil and my brother’s health condition forced us to flee our beloved country to seek help in a foreign, unknown land: The United States. After almost three arduous years of all of us going in and out of hospitals, my brother got the surgery he needed and his life was changed forever. Soon after, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and my life now changed. Being young, not even fifteen years old, and dealing with a condition…

My gut sank to an unbearable low as I watched my thirty-two-year-old mother require support to limp just five steps to the restroom; cancer stripped her of life. At twelve-years-old, I felt distraught in my inability to save her and return the endless love that my Haitian parents poured into my nurturing. However, the hope the physicians brought us has inspired me to become a doctor so that I, too, can serve as an envoy of hope to sufferers of illness. My father is a physician I strive to be like. Every patient always has a smile on their face after seeing him because he does not only treat diseases: he treats people.…

The other favorite activity that I have participated in during my high school career is physician shadowing. Through the Health Practicum course offered at Anderson, I have been able to gain invaluable exposure to the medical field and a variety of occupations. Ever since my Honors Anatomy and Physiology course I took sophomore year, my interest in the medical field has grown and developed. Following this course I took Honors Pathophysiology and decided that the next logical course in my health-related progression would be Health Practicum. The shadowing I’ve been able to complete through this course opportunity has helped to solidify my plans for a future in the medical field.…

This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…

I participated in this program last year and it was one of the most insightful experiences in the medical field I been able to have. Volunteering is great however, shadowing is much more, ironically, engaging. It provokes me to think critically when observing situation as if I was taking care of the patient myself. Then, I can match it up with what the physician whom I am shadowing does and thinks.…

Choosing an ideal MD program is a difficult process. Some of the factors to consider during the vetting process are academic programs and opportunities that the college offers, location and existing student-faculty population. These elements are important to make the learning process fluent especially during medical school as you want give 110% without any other distractions. After doing research, I think the MD program offered at George Washington University matches the qualities of a quintessential medical program. One of the quotes from a student at George Washington was, “At GW, I have learned to view my intersectional identity and life experiences as an asset to the practice of medicine thanks to an inclusive curriculum and faculty that understand and champion diversity in our colleagues as well as our patients.”…

When practicing medicine, I will focus on sharing my expertise with those who do not have access to adequate care, and it is clear that OSU College of Medicine holds similar values. During my collegiate career, I have worked towards the ideals of providing adequate healthcare to communities across the globe through founding a chapter of Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) at the University of Arkansas. Our chapter works to better the global community by fundraising for Adopt-a-Projects, which is a program that allows students to assist the mission of FIMRC. Our favorite projects included providing mosquito nets in El Salvador and helping fund a garden for orphans in Uganda. FIMRC has truly become a large part of my life and I hope to continue working with them in the future.…

    1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…
