Physical Therapy Personal Statement

Physical fitness has always been a tremendously important part of my life; from age 3 to present day, I have been engrossed in a variety of athletic activities ranging from recreational volleyball, to intramural basketball, to high school tennis. After experiencing injuries that would not only sideline me from participating in sports but also affecting my daily routines such as taking steps up the stairs, I learned how transcendent the value of movement is. In conjunction with my value for physical health and movement, I also have a passion in helping others; this naturally propelled me to pursue a career in physical therapy.
In 2013, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) adopted the vision statement of “transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience” to guide all practitioners of its profession. As an aspiring doctor of physical therapy, I will pursue those guidelines as a model for the type of physical therapist I strive to be. Some of my duties included assisting the physical therapist with therapeutic exercises, assessing patient needs, and supporting the front office. In addition, I also observed a few of the physical therapists. Many patients who come in are often stressed as they are unfamiliar with how the rehabilitation process works or unsure if physical therapy can return them to their former quality of life. But once they meet the physical therapist, many of their worries become eased. I was amazed at the physical therapist’s ability to create a comforting environment for the patient while guiding the patient through each step of the rehabilitation process. PT 826 Reading Assignment The information given in the article by Lau, Chiu, & Lam (2010) about using thoracic manipulation for the treatment of neck pain was very new to me. There were several instances in the past where I treated patients with neck pain by giving mobilizations techniques and modalities in and around cervical area. Part of the vision is the concept of physical therapists moving more into the community which is also part of social responsibility as one of APTA’s core values (APTA, 2012). To build on this vision, physical therapists need to move past looking at the shoulder or knee injury from the traditional medical model of treating a patient, and more toward how it is impacting their daily movement and functioning at home, school, work or recreation (Hayhurst, 2014). The physical therapists in the school system have already moved away from this medical model given the environment in which we work. However, the school staff relies on therapists for medical and clinical expertise. The only interaction with physicians is to sign a plan of care if the individual therapist is billing Medicaid for a student’s therapy services which are carried out through a fax…

The origin of my love for physical therapy started after my first exposure to physical therapy when I tore my ACL my junior year of high school. Due to his compassion, determination, and knowledge, I was placed in an environment to succeed. Not only did he care about facilitating my rehabilitation, but he also cared about me as an individual.…
