Physical Therapy Internship Essay

My internship took place at Elite Sports Medicine Physical Therapy, which is an outpatient clinic that was connected to a sports medicine doctors’ office. The setup of the place was unique to me since in one building there was the doctors’ office, physical therapy, workout gym and a yoga place. I ended up loving the atmosphere of this place since it was centered around fitness and people who were like minded. Everyone acted and joked around like a family, and they were very quick to welcome me into this family dynamic. I worked with two physical therapists and a physical therapist’s assistant in the clinic. They made me feel as if I could always ask them a question at any time, whether they were busy or not. It is important to pack snacks, caffeine when needed, and also take advantage of the break. This will help you not be tired and able to help to the best of your ability when you are there. Also, when it comes to journaling it is best to take notes throughout the day and then type up that day’s journal at the end of each day. This way it does not get overwhelming after a few days and it helps you not to forget the information you learned throughout the day. I learned this pretty quickly after the first few days. I was not able to learn as much administrative work of the clinic as I would have liked do to the front desk employee going on vacation. However, I was able to help out when I asked if she needed my help. I should have asked her earlier if she needed help, because she did and just did not know if that was what I needed to be doing. So ask around to different people if they need help whenever you have the time, because they often need it and it is a great learning opportunity. Overall, the internship is a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Elite Sports Medicine Physical Therapy. The internship has made me eager to start my physical therapy school learning and it has also encouraged myself that this is the career I will love

My first choice for an occupation would be Occupational or Physical Therapist. I have learned so much throughout my life on these 2 jobs from self-experience to pure interest. My interest in being able to help people and learning about how the human body works and the techniques to improve it are some of the factors that have inspired me to take on this career path. My second choice would be a lawyer, I debated greatly whether I’d want to become a lawyer or deal with something in the medical world. In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…
