Their Special Abilities to be Heroes There has always been a need for physical therapy, and the act of physical therapy has been around since 3000 BC. It started off with just a massage, and then it was modified by the Romans. Finally, in the 1800s this modified massage was considered to be a scientific procedure. While physical therapy started to grow, it started adding specific concentrations called advance proficiency programs. These include acute care, geriatrics, neuromuscular, aquatics, integumentary, oncology, cardiovascular/pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and pediatrics. This care corresponds with its name “Acute”, acute meaning is sharp. While these patients are admitted to this hospital after surgery or some type of accident, the care has to be sharp and specific. The overall goal that the physical therapist is trying to accomplish, is to get the patient well enough so he or she can get discharged feeling medically stable. In this type of environment, it may require some good motivation and patience from the physical therapist. During acute care, the physical therapy is concentrated on the basics to help and improve the patient for independence. The patient that receives this type of treatment are from injuries or diseases that affect the neuromuscular system. During this treatment the patient receives massage therapy in specific areas, proper stretching, and flexibility. After a treatment the physical therapist will give the patient homework for home care to help them work on micro managing their pain levels. This program really helps patients start cutting back on their pain medicine, and teach them how to have their body produce natural pain medications. There are so many benefits with this program, and this program treats a variety of injuries as
