Physical Therapy Cycle

I previously applied to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Iowa in 2016. I was denied admission for that cycle and hope to be admitted this cycle. Since getting denied I have taken several steps to enhance my application. In my final year of college, I have continued my upward trend in G.P.A., including grades in prerequisite courses. To show the hard work I put in during the last year I was named an academic All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and was also added to the Iowa Conference Academic Wrestling Team. Additionally, this May I graduated from Central College with honors.
Another component I needed to improve upon was gaining more volunteer experiences unrelated to physical therapy to demonstrate my personal

Of the many opportunities I have had in the past year, this has been the most beneficial. This job is located on the acute rehab floor, where our main goal is to help patients recover from a disabling injury or illness and restore basic functioning. In order to qualify for the program, patients must require three hours of therapy five days a week, divided between physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. My job description entails providing transport of patients, maintaining treatment areas, assisting with treatments and showers, ordering equipment and creating the schedule for the entire department. Thus far, the most beneficial thing I have learned is how multiple disciplines come together to benefit the patient. Physical therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapist, nurses, and doctors all have varying levels of education and are able to come together to offer insights that would not have been discovered alone. Through these innovative ideas, patients receive the best care possible. As a whole, I feel that I have had a very productive year enhancing my grades, volunteer opportunities, and work experiences. Due to this, I feel that I have further demonstrated my commitment to attending The University of Iowa’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program. Because of a slow start in college, I may not have the best grades as other applicants, but what I do have is an intense desire to reach my goal of becoming a physical

PT 826 Reading Assignment The information given in the article by Lau, Chiu, & Lam (2010) about using thoracic manipulation for the treatment of neck pain was very new to me. There were several instances in the past where I treated patients with neck pain by giving mobilizations techniques and modalities in and around cervical area. This article was a convincing one which helped me to understand the concept of biomechanical and etiological relationship between cervical and thoracic structures and how this knowledge can be capitalized by effectively using thoracic mobilization in patients suffering from chronic mechanical neck pain.…

Throughout the process of developing my application, I have gained skills that will make me a fantastic EWU DPT student. As a child, I endured a very impoverished upbringing, and I had to find a way to fund my entire college education. I have received multiple scholarships to help fund my education, but I still needed two to three jobs to help support myself. While being a full-time student and working part-time, I have managed to hold a 3.91 GPA, participated in extracurricular activities, and held leadership positions at Idaho State University.…

I started out as an intern to the physical therapist aide, which included preparing equipment for patients with special needs or disabilities and perform other duties, such as maintenance of ice/hot packs and the equipment required for treatments. After about a month, the head physical therapist asked me to transition to a physical therapist aide. I was excited about the transition, because it is my passion to assist patients. During each shift, I spent six hours assisting approximately 15 patients in their treatments and answering any questions related to their treatments. As an intern, I initially took the initiative to talk to patients and sympathized with their condition.…
