Building rapport with my patients is probably the biggest aspect to that process so my patients can begin to feel comfortable with me as we begin their treatment process. When patients come in for their initial appointments, I have to interview them about how their injury occurred. The questions, for the most part, are already written out for physical therapists, so the attending behavior skills are extremely important. If I am looking uninterested when they are explaining their injury, they might not give me all the details, which could greatly affect their treatment plan. Seeming uninterested will also hurt the physical therapist’s relationship with the client. Looking for body language is also a very important aspect of being a physical therapist. If I am doing treatment on a patient, and I see that their face has a look of pain on it, which could be a sign to stop what I am doing and see if everything is all right.
