Expectation, Situation
Introduction
Due revolution in information technology, the role of library has been changed astonishingly in past decades. Traditional libraries emphasis on providing quiet space and printed books, however, modern libraries are not only providing traditional academic reference service but also providing digital information service; not only for study but also for socialising. It is obvious that the area of computer provision have been enlarged increasingly according to the necessity of computers to students, especially to younger students.
97% of younger Americans, who were under 30 years old, said it was important to free access computer and internet in course of their study (Zickuhr, Rainie, & Purcell, 2013). Most students have their own laptops, and it is quite convenient for them to bring it to school instead of using libraries’. Furthermore, internet is everywhere, home, school, entertainment spots. Social area is as if a break during long marathon (intense study) without leaving library, therefore comfortable and relax atmosphere in social areas are apparently important. Socialising is possible in libraries, and it is optional.
Language Hub Area
The increasing numbers of foreign students come to New Zealand to study these recent years. Language hub area provides resource to students to improve learning and practical use of foreign language, and it is a place for intercultural communication. The language hub normally comprise with video camera, voice, TV film, internet, computers and all sorts of new media, which can be utilised as a classroom as well (Cyprus, 2004). This not only can use resource efficiently and also can creates an interactive environment to ease students’ language learning pressure during studying.
Overseas students may have no chance to meet similar background students on campus for academic and social purpose. However, “library, a physical space, serves as a communal gathering space with intercultural meaning” (Freeman,
