Physical literacy can be described ‘as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.” (Whitehead, 2014). It is understanding what pushes you to undertake physical activity as an essential part of your life. This essay is about Physical Literacy, why it is important, and how the concept developed.
Understanding physical literacy is very important for our wellbeing and for the wellbeing of our country and the world. Physical literacy covers and includes much more than just physical education in schools, or sporting events, Most importantly, it involves the motivation for exercise, the confidence gained from doing exercise, and the improvement in your body and mind that undertaking exercise brings.
People in the UK are becoming less active and more obese. In the UK in 1993, 13.2% of men and 16.4% of women were obese. This had increased to 24.4% for men and 25.1% for women by 2012. In 2012 only 67% of men and 55% of women, aged 16 and over, met the Government recommendations for aerobic activity, of 150 minutes per week of moderate activity. 26% of women and 19% of men were regarded as inactive. In 2012-13, there were over 10,000 admission episodes in NHS hospitals with a primary diagnosis of obesity. This was almost 9 times higher than in 2002-3 (Health and Social Care Info Centre, 2014)
