Physical Therapy Ethical Principles

Ethical Principles In both fields of community health and physical therapy the ethical principles used are similar and may coincide. The first characteristic that I believe would be useful in these fields is leadership. This allows for better developments and improvements. A main few main principles to understand and practice are autonomy, beneficence, and nonmaleficence. Autonomy is important for both community health workers and physical therapists to understand because it is their job to understand that it is not their decision it is solely the patients decision. In the field of health decisions are made every day and not all will be easy or pleasant. There will be scenarios that one comes across and it won’t be easy. As a Physical Therapist I could come across confidentiality issues commonly. This can be easily avoided as long as one only talks to the patients about their problems and doesn’t talk about their patients in public with others. Another common ethical issue to occur often is failure of consent to be sure one has consented try to get it written so there is proof to attest to. Luckily one of the most common ethical issues of abortion is not likely to be a problem in the physical therapy field. This is normally a problem spiritually, and subjectively. One issue that occurs constantly is compliancy issues. Whether a patient is attending or may just not be compliant with the exercise programs, but with an issue like this it is hard to achieve a goal. It is hard to avoid because it all depends on the patients attitude toward their therapy the best a physical therapist can do is have a positive attitude and hope it rubs off on the patient. Health care ethics and laws are so important to me because it give us guidelines and builds our character. These ethics and laws reviewed in the paragraphs above are important to my profession because they are the structure that holds our health and medical system together. In this course I learned more about ethical principles and the pillars of moral strength, which can allow for us to grow as future workers in the medical field. My knowledge of the different laws was expanded upon giving more depth and understanding of the laws. The course generally allowed me to critically think and put myself in scenarios and apply my knowledge into the situation, creating an overall understanding of the ethics and laws to health
