Mandatory Physical Education Policy

Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience that there should be a mandatory physical education for children and teenagers throughout their schooling.

Thesis: Right now the United States doesn’t require mandatory physical education and it’s causing children to create bad habits that could cause health issues down the line; Physical education should be mandatory for K-12 throughout the United States.

According to (Erica Lue and the National PTA) the idea of cutting recess and other physical activity is directly connected to many weight and health problems.
1. Obesity has gone up in America quite a bit in the last 15 years. One in three children in America are obese.
2. Children are full of energy and have trouble staying focused in class, so test scores could possibly go down from lack of focus.
3. Children are sitting all day, which can create bad posture habits for years to come.
B. According to the article (“Importance of Physical Education” by Charlotte Kelso) P.E. is just as important for children to learn about as other core subjects.
1. Children need to understand and learn why physical activity can help them improve their quality of life.
2. A student needs to learn about teamwork, hard work, and specificity of different sports.
3. All of these things can carry over to people’s lives even after high school, by making good habits for daily exercise, posture, and the overall learning about physical activity.

So what are the main causes for these problems?

There was an 8 percent increase in children aerobic fitness.
2. Stress has been released due to vigorous physical activity, grades then have been rising, obesity is starting to go down, self esteem and confidence is rising.

Now that you have heard a little but about Illinois plan on enhancing P.E. I will now speak about how they applied that plan into place.

IV. This solution on enhanced P.E. and mandatory P.E. class up until graduation will ensure that children get proper physical activity and learn about the importance of that activity.
A. Three main partners needed to be put in place and work together for this Enhanced P.E. to be put in place. All this is coming from the (Enhanced Physical Education in Illinois by Illinois State Board of Education.)
1. Partner number one is the school board.
a. Local school boards would hold annual meetings to discuss the enhanced P.E. strategies put in place and to identify issues and concerns.
2. The superintendents who are somewhat of the CEO of education for the schooling district. The teachers will inform and local health advocates will inform them about the physical activity being put in place.
a. With that the superintendents will develop ideas for funding for the new and improved, enhanced P.E.
