Referral, assessment, and placement procedures are the foundation behind adapted physical education and are vital to ensure that eligible students receive the appropriate education program. There are 7 steps in the process. The first of which is to accumulate information about the student. At this step the teacher must consider all medical and emotional problems that the student may have. The second step is to screen the student, gather parental consent, and complete a comprehensive assessment. Without parental consent, the teacher can go no further in designing any lesson plans. In step three, the teacher develops a program to meet the student 's individual needs as part of the IEP/multidisciplinary team. In step four, the instructional modifications necessary to meet the learner 's educational needs are determined. In step five, the placement of the student is determined. There are many different areas to place students with disabilities or problems. For example, some students with mental disorders or problems can be put in a specific class with only others like them. Other classes can include the child with the modified education program and students with the average lesson plan.
