Babies to Toddlers: 0-3 Years
Physical Development: at this stage babies develop very quickly. At birth babies depend on built-in reflexes for movements that help them survive and enable them to fee, by latching on to a mothers breast, sucking or grasping things in their hands whenever they touch something. By age 1, they have much more control over their bodies and will be relatively mobile; crawling, shuffling, rolling over by themselves and pulling or pushing on things to begin to stand.
Between 1 and 2 years, their limbs grow quite quickly and their centre of gravity changes allowing them to begin walking. When they are able to control their limb movements, they introduce the use of hands for drawing attention, pointing, holding things, pushing and pulling toys whilst they walk. They enjoy trying to feed themselves with finger foods, trying to dress themselves, climbing steps or furniture and playing with moving toys like balls. Waving goodbye becomes a game and they start to point to things they want and shake their head to mean ‘no’.
Between the ages of 2 and 3 they start to gain even more fine control over their hands, starting to produce marks on paper progressing to scribbles and then recognisable shapes with pens and pencils. Books become fun, full of pictures and pages to turn. Walking

Strength is now added to a childs growth. As some may just be starting to mature physically, others may have already reached full physical maturity. Girls may already be dealing with breast growth and regular periods and it is now that the boys will begin to go through puberty properly. At the end of this stage there are often big differences in heights and strengths for both genders, and generally the boys will be taller than the girls on average.
