Physical Changes In Fahrenheit 451

In the story Fahrenheit 451, the main character Guy Montag, undergoes many mental and emotional changes. The most significant change, is that he is now more aware of the world around him. Towards the beginning of the book, he was quite carefree and did not notice anything outside of the box of his life. He did not choose to question or look deeper into some of the more important topics of life. Right before Montag meets Clarisse, he is said to be walking down the street, “He walked towards the corner, thinking little at all about nothing in particular” (Bradbury 2). This is right after he had just set fire to someone's house. The question arises, how can someone burn down a house, and not think anything of it? In the very start, one might …show more content…
A girl who looks for the bigger picture and thinks, outside the box. To Clarisse, the world is not a playground that must bow to her command, the world is a mysterious object, that must be found and explored. .She did not fit the status quo in the book. For she was curious, and curiousness is not acceptable, because when you are curious you think, and when you think, you question This is why she changed Guy. Clarisse made Guy think and believe,that there was something out in the world. She makes him look at the little things in life. One of the things she does for Guy, is she makes him smell the leaves. Clarisse says, “Let’s talk about something else. Have you ever smelled the old leaves? Don’t they smell like cinnamon in a way” (Bradbury 26). This event does not just make him smell some old leaves, it makes him stop, look, and smell the world around him. This was one of the last times that Montag would ever talk to Clarisse. Over a small period of time, in which Clarisse was still in Montag’s neighborhood, she changed Montag, and made him care about her. So when she disappeared Montag was unhappy. Four days after she disappeared, Montag asked Milly, his wife, about her. Milly had forgotten to tell him about what had happened to her. She said,”No. The same girl. McClellan. McClellan. Run over by a car. Four days ago. I’m not sure. But I think she is dead. The family moved out anyway. I don’t know. But I think she is dead” (Bradbury 44). This changed Montag, he was emotionally exhausted, but this made him come to an understanding about things in his life. Even though Clarisse dying made Montag sad, it made him realize everything he hadn’t before about the world around him. In a way it opened his lenses to see the bigger picture.
