According to PEW RESEARCH CENTER, social media sites such as facebook, instagram and twitter usages have increased. “Instagram” especially, increased its usages from 13% in 2012 to 26% in 2014.
With the increased usage of instagram and demand for cosmetic surgery, our group wants examine whether Instagram affects the likelihood to undergo cosmetic surgery on college students and in which ways.
Chapter 2: Literature review
Cosmetic surgery, self-esteem and media
Self-esteem connects with the likelihood to undergo cosmetic surgery. Study investigates factors that motivate people to do cosmetic surgery. The result showed that “Low self-esteem, life dissatisfaction and media exposure to cosmetic surgery are significant predictors of the likelihood of undergoing cosmetic surgery” Especially people with low self-esteem tend to undergo cosmetic surgery to improve their self perception. Also people who particularly have low self-esteem and life dissatisfaction would find cosmetic surgery more beneficial (Furnham & Levitas, 2012). A study showed that people with physical attractiveness “were viewed both more positively and more accurately in first impressions” (Lorenzo, Biesanz & Human, 2010). Another study revealed the importance of physical attractiveness, specifically for online dating websites. It examines about “the role of physical attractiveness in online dater’s self presentation and deception”. The study showed that physical attractiveness indeed has an impact on how online daters present themselves. In case of unattractive daters especially women, they are likely to “enhance photograph and descriptors of their physical appearances” (Toma & Hancock, 2009). From these results, it shows how importance physical attractiveness is in the internet, especially when it comes to first impression whereas people who find themselves “unattractive” have to “lie” about their profile pictures and descriptions. Social media increase the desire to undergo cosmetic surgery. Study investigates social media and online self-presentation’s effects on how we see ourselves and bodies. The results showed that usage of social media can influence people self-view which increase the desire to change their bodies. Furthermore it is predicted that the more people use social media sites, the more they want to undergo cosmetic surgery which cause by appearance investment (D.A. de Vries, 2014). According to the
