Journal Article summary Perfomring a physical assessment is a vital part of the assessment process. A physical assessment provides a starting point for the next nursing process step. Over the years physical assessments have become a major role in nursing practice. Although physical assessments are a new concept to the nursing profession, they plays a crucial role in the nursing process. According to Duff, Gardiner, and Barnes (2007), the need for nurses to perform accurate physical assessments is becoming more evident as the scope of nursing roles and clinical practice continues to change.

In the research only 30 different skills were persistently used and a fraction of those focused on the cardiac and respiratory system. Some of the skills that were hardly used was those to assess the throat, eyes, ears, and nose. One of the reasons why these body systems were not consistently being assessed was because other specialists usually look more in depth at these body parts. Also different specialties performed different procedure to assess the throat, eyes,ears, and nose.
The purpose of the physical assessment article to nurses is to stress the importance of knowing each skill in a physical assessment, and performing the skill right. Also it is important to know that a physical assessment is not only the first step of the nursing process, but it is an ongoing procedure for the patient.
