When working in a care setting, especially with service users with physical disabilities, workers need to acknowledge that the service users are vulnerable to abuse. This is because people with physical disabilities are so much more dependent on care givers to supply them with the support they need in order to live clean and healthy lives. Two of the main types of abuse that care workers will face when working with vulnerable and disabled service users are physical abuse and neglect.

US Legal (2015) states that physical neglect is when a carer deprives a service user of their basic needs, this includes food, water and shelter. This is because if these needs are not fulfilled there it could cause serious illness or injury. Linda, M, PhD (1998) states that passive neglect is the unintentional deprivation of the service user’s physical, social and/or emotional needs. An example of this would be a carer forgetting to allow the service user social time with others due to a work overload. Cohen, E, PhD (2013) states that emotional neglect is the failure to provide emotional support depending on the type of relationship there is between to the two people. Emotional neglect is different to emotional abuse in a way that neglecting is done by omission rather than abusive actions. An example of emotional neglect could be show in case study 3 with the elderly resident needing more emotional support than what was given to him. National Disability Abuse and Neglect Hotline (2014) states that wilful deprivation is denying a person of medical care, shelter or food and as a result creating a risk of harm. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (2015) states that one of the long term effects of neglect is depression. This is mainly the case of emotional neglect as shown in case study 3, with their being a chance that the elderly man will suffer depression due to the isolation he is experiencing after being shouted at.
