Physical abuse is a serious, wide spread problem. According to the National Committee for the Prevention of Abuse, “Physical abuse is a widespread problem all over the world. The phenomenon of physical abuse is not limited to any specific subset of the population” (NCPA). Not only does it cause problems for the abuser, it can also affect the victims later in life. C. Kennedy once said, “Don’t judge yourself by what others did to you” (America’s Mental Health Channel). This paper will discuss several different topics concerning physical abuse such as, who are the victims, what is physical abuse, the effects of physical abuse, physical abuse in children, and physical abuse in adults. This paper will also talk about a special unit in Mississippi that helps the victims of physical abuse. What is physical abuse, and how can it affect the victims later in life? Victims of abuse are referred to as vulnerable persons because, according to the Legislature of Vulnerable Adults Act “victims are more likely to be someone who does not have the ability to care for themselves” (LVAA). There is a unit in Mississippi called the vulnerable person’s unit. This unit was created by Attorney General, Jim Hood in 2001. The Legislature of Vulnerable Adults Act defines a vulnerable person as “a person or child who cannot or is un-able to perform in daily life, or cannot or is un-able to take care of their self, due to a mental, physical, emotional, or developmental disability” (LVAA).
