The Cask Of Amontillado Psychological Analysis

A Tale of a Twisted Mind In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” is a short story that focuses solely on revenge. The question that poses itself while reading the story is, does Montresor have psychological issues, or is his revenge on Fortunato just? If one looks closely at the actions and thoughts of the egotistical character, one might see the dysfunctional characteristics of the narrator and protagonist, Montresor. Leading one to the realization of how deep the psychological issues are by the revelation of all the reverse phycology that Montresor uses throughout the story in order that Montresor may have his revenge. The story begins with Montresor first talking about Fortunato. Fortunato is a man who has given thousands of injuries to Montresor. Impunity means that it goes without being punished for a wrong deed. Montresor then talks about how he gave no good reason for Fortunato to doubt his good will. Leaving more mystery to the story while deceiving the reader once again as to what is truly going through Montresor’s head. After this, Montresor goes on to explain who Fortunato is; Fortunato is by his definition “A man to be respected and even feared” (226). He also explains early on that he had a weak point. Fortunato is a man who has pride, pride in being a connoisseur of wine. This is the way in which Montresor lures Fortunato into his trap. Montresor then sees Fortunato, and explains to him that he is luckily met, for he, Montresor, has a pipe of Amontillado. Amontillado is known as a fine wine. After telling Fortunato of the wine, Montresor then goes on to explain that he doubts the authenticity of the wine.
