The Phones and Phubbing group would like increase awareness of phubbing on Gannon University’s campus. Our first plan of action would be to make flyers to explain phubbing and have them posted in areas where it might be more common, like an elevator. Also, we would like to make stickers for students to wear to show their support of the movement. Furthermore, we would like to host an event to explain phubbing and why college students should be especially aware of it. At the event, students would receive a presentation about phubbing then take part in a mingling activity to meet new people and create small talk. However, there are some possible causes that particularly stand out. The first is the avoidance of interactions with new people which may be a result of their introverted personality. Some examples of this would include being in an elevator, waiting room, or cafeteria with people that you either did not know well or not at all. Rather than interacting with them, people take out their phones. The next reason for phubbing is boredom. When people are bored, during a conversation, in class, waiting for someone, or not doing anything at all, one of the first solutions is to take out their mobile device. Regardless of whether or not they have notifications, people frequently check texts, emails, or social media apps. According to our survey, 70% of people from the ages 18-24 often or always check their phones even when there is no notification. These same responses could also be an excuse to get out of an awkward or uncomfortable situation/conversation, or because everyone else around you is “phubbing,” an initial response could be to follow the crowd.
