Hello everyone. The chemical that i’ve chosen to research is called “phthalate”, and the question I’m asking is whether it should be banned?

The chemical formula for the most popular form of phthalate is C8H4O4. There is also a substance called “Phthalic acid”, from which phthalates originate, which is used to synthesize into phthalate.

Some of phthalates physical properties include: a melting point of 207°, and a boiling point of 378°. It’s a colourless, white crystalline (translucent) solid, at room temperature, and is odourless. for its chemical properties, it’s a combustible substance (when it comes to its acid variant), it reacts violently with nitric acid, and is insoluble in water.

-Phthalates can be found in a number of plastic products, such as the ones that i’ve listed on the board: various plastic products, such as child’s toys (they are in most danger because they have the possibility of putting the toys containing phthalates in their mouth), cosmetics because It makes them last longer. It is also used in hair products to help in the styling of hair. It’s used in food packaging, paint, vinyl flooring tiles, vinyl siding, mostly to make it more durable.

-There are serious risks that are present with phthalates. A few years ago, the United states put out a bill that made sure that manufacturers were to not put more than 0.1% of phthalates inside any consumer product. However, this is not to say that we still have phthalate-concentrated products still among us. Those products can and/or will be thrown out into landfill and can leach into the water that we drink and what fish swim in and/or into the soil.
