These ads affect men also by creating false expectations of how women look.
The concept of desirable women beauty has been ever changing since the birth of mankind. Healthy and well-nourished was considered to be beautiful and being thin was considered to be unattractive. Suddenly the world saw young girls to prefer a slim figure. They started dieting excessively and end up with health issues. They started considering the celebrities and models as role models, rather than their mothers and other women in the community. Teenagers started opting and undergoing through breast implants, botox, facial fillers and liposuction to make themselves desirable.
Human beings are greatly influenced by the media. Even though being aware of the fact that the advertisements use digitally manipulated images, people tend to buy it. This has been termed as Third­Person Effect. Mass communicate messages are falsely perceived as a fact. Countries like France, Switzerland and UK has expressed its support by adopting it. While the others argue that by this rule the labelling would be a time consuming measure and costly measure to enforce.
In communication industry, ethics for photo journalism is one of the several issues that has been faced today. Taking this into consideration the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) has published a Code of Ethics with an aim to promote quality work as well as to hold strong the confidence of the public on the professionals. These standards are being promoted to follow in the daily work of the professional.
The photographers of the Newspapers like the New York Times, the Washington Post and USA Today are provided with strict guidelines and ethics to be followed. Journalists are supposed to submit all the relevant proofs along with the photographs submitted to get them published.
Though these guidelines help and control the professionals in the industry, it does not apply to other industry and the larger public. Anyone with a decent camera or a smartphone can capture photographs. Often times the media collect the photographs collected from such sources. Knowing whether it is genuine or not is very difficult
