I made their job easier by allowing them to experiment with lighting and positions. They would occasionally take a few pictures of me in the locations before the family got there to test if the sun was in the right direction. Also, Beth Ann experimented with lighting equipment where she would hold the reflecting umbrella or softbox and I would take the picture and we would decide which position looks best. I also entertained some of the children in the pictures, trying to make them smile, so it would make the picture easier if it was a big family. It was often difficult to adjust my camera settings quickly when changing location or position because I usually don’t have the settings on manual. When on manual, you have to pay attention to the exposure. I had to frequently check and adjust the aperture and shutter speed. If there were one thing I would change about this project, I would also assist a photographer who does a different field of photography other than family photography. I would like to know how photographers take pictures of landscapes, for example, and how they sell their works and advertise. Both of the photographers I shadowed had customers who were usually their friends or returning clients that are paying for good pictures. I think it would be more difficult with first time customers. I would feel pressured that I’d only have one shoot to give them good photos and I’d feel apprehensive if …show more content…
Beth Ann gave me tips to quickly change the manual exposure settings. She taught me things about my camera and that the more I practice, the quicker and easier it will become. I learned how to deal with families, how to pose them, and how to make them smile. One of the tricks Stephanie taught me was that if a child had a stuffed animal and they weren’t smiling, to ask if the stuffed animal would take his/her picture. For example, a little girl had a doll with her and she got excited when Stephanie told her that her doll could take her picture. So Stephanie held the doll behind the camera and the little girl smiled for her doll. Also, letting the kids see the pictures taken or even letting them take the pictures lets them become more comfortable with the situation and warm up to her. Both photographers recommended I get a more expensive lens for my camera and gave me suggestions. Stephanie also made other suggestions in my mock interview like how to start a photography business. I believe the interview went well. She explained how she prices her photo sessions. I learned they get about 10-15 photos for each mini-session and around 30 for an hour session. I thought it was interesting because she also explained how she would give them all the ones she liked so they would sometimes get 20 photos which make the customers happy because they feel like they are getting a good
