Phosphorus: German Alchemist Hennig Brandt

Superior Essays
Phosphorus was discovered by the German alchemist Hennig Brandt, in 1669. In a surely arduous process, Brandt heated and processed 50 to 60 buckets, per experiment, of urine until he isolated a substance he named ‘light-bearer’ or phosphorus. Each of these experiments could take two weeks. He would let these buckets of urine stand until they ‘bred worms’. Brandt would then boil the urine with sand, and this is how he distilled elemental phosphorus. This discovery is also notable, aside from discovering phosphorus of course, because this was the first time we had discovered an element not known to ancient peoples. Brandt, also called the last alchemist, kept it a secret, thinking he had found something that could change base metals into gold, …show more content…
It is not phosphorescent, as it’s name might suggest, instead it is chemiluminescent. The difference being that chemiluminescence is caused by a chemical reaction, in the case of phosphorus, it’s reacting with O2 in the air. Phosphorescence is where a substance emits photons it absorbed at an earlier time. White phosphorus is P4, these four phosphorus atoms are arranged in a tetrahedral form. One of the only safe ways to store white phosphorus is to store it under water, as phosphorus is only slightly soluble there, and can not spontaneously combust. White phosphorus has it’s own uses, aside from being used to create important compounds, it can be used in flares, incendiary devices, and for smoke generation. Some of it’s military applications are rather controversial, as white phosphorus munitions can cause extreme damage. Some more familiar ways one might have come in contact with white phosphorus are rat poison or …show more content…
Phosphorus is a limiting growth factor in many environments. It is important to acknowledge organic and inorganic phosphorus. Organic phosphorus is phosphorus bonded with carbon or carbon and oxygen. Inorganic phosphorus is that phosphorus that isn’t. Inorganic phosphorus isn’t terribly useful for large portions of life, so it must be changes to organic phosphorus. As previously mentioned, some phytoplankton and plants can do this. Creatures eat these phytoplankton, those creatures are eaten, and so on. This is how phosphorus moves through the biosphere. Organic phosphorus is used, in a phosphate form, for nucleotides. Nucleotides, alone, are incredibly important, as they play important parts in metabolism and are carriers of metabolic energy. When nucleotides come together, they form ribonucleic, otherwise known as RNA, and deoxyribonucleic acid which is commonly called DNA. Phosphorus can move from the biosphere through decomposition of plants and animals, or those animals leavings. This way, usually, phosphorus reenters the hydrosphere, and phosphorus can go back and forth between the hydrosphere and biosphere many times before it becomes rock once

In the Florida Everglades ecosystem, Phosphorous is the main nutrient that the South Florida Water Management District is attempting to control. Phosphorous is the same nutrient that is a contributing factor to the algae problem in Lake Erie. In South Florida, the main source of drinking water stems from underground aquifers made of porous limestone, that is refilled via the everglades(NPS,2016). In our region, the main source for drinking water for cities, stems from Lake Erie. Thus, phosphorous has an effect on drinking water in both regions.…

This experiment was designed to test what the limiting nutrient was in Loughberry Lake, as well as examine the trophic state of the lake. In order to find out what the limiting nutrient was, we performed a few different tests. We began with a secchi disk test to see the transparency of the water. Then, we took water samples that we later used to test the turbidity levels of the water after adding varying amounts of phosphorous and nitrogen.…

Large decreases in the algae population will most likely impact the bay ecosystem by killing off organisms and plants. Algae is a crucial plant in the Chesapeake Bay that needs to steadily grow to keep the animal population consistent. Bay grass, also known as underwater grass, grows in the superficial areas of the Chesapeake Bay. It is crucial to the environment because it absorbs extra nutrients, shelters small fish, and keeps the water looking less murky. Like Algae, Bay grass provides oxygen, food, and nutrients and is an important plant in this ecosystem.…

Back on the date of June 18, 1773 Joseph Priestley was in his science lab exploring and studying about the elements. Priestley had done a lot of experiments to find more about the element now known as oxygen. The first experiment dealt with using the previous methods Carl W. Scheele used. Carl W. Scheele was a chemist from sweden, but in his discovery of oxygen he had other people helping him throughout the process. Joseph had thought in his mind, “ If I can do this scientific inquiry on my own, I will technically become the first person to discover oxygen.”…

Discovered in 1898, the element neon has helped produce a staple of American cities and everyday night life: neon lights. Neon was first proved to exist by William Ramsay and Morris Travers of London, who decided to name the newly discovered element after the Greek word neos, or new. This finding was “vital in proving the existence of isotopes” (McCormick 1). The Periodic Table of Elements shows neon on the farthest right column, meaning it belongs to the noble gas family. As a part of the noble gases, neon is chemically inert, meaning it’s very hard to get it to easily react with other elements.…
