Burns and colleagues (2009) studied the use of phonomicrosurgery in ten singers who presented with intercordal vocal fold cysts. Laryngeal stroboscopy was completed both preoperatively and postoperatively for each participant to determine the presence of a cyst. Mucosal pliability and glottal competency during phonation were also noted. Following the study, Burns and colleagues …show more content…
6 of the participants identified as professional voice users. Fu, Theodoros, and Ward (2015) conducted their assessment using auditory perceptual ratings, patient perception questionnaires, and stroboscopic, acoustic, and physiological measures both pre- and post-therapy. Following an initial in-person therapy session, the participants completed 8 therapy sessions via telepractice over a three-week period using the Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy program. An advantage of using telepractice is a lower risk of drop-out since therapy can be completed around the participant’s schedule. All of the participants showed significant improvement in their mucosal wave and glottal closure following therapy. In addition, auditory perceptual ratings post-therapy indicated improvements in overall voice quality, roughness, and weakness. Because the aim of this study was to compare the results of telepractice therapy against traditional therapy, the results were focused on the results of the patient questionnaires. Also, the small sample size limits the possibility of generalization to larger
